John Thomas | January 23, 2016 Obama ran for office with a key promise, at least implicitly implied, that certain people would be better off under his presidency. That being the case, you would think that he would have taken special care to help those who had the biggest impact on helping him get into office. So, of all the people, you would think that he wouldnt have given the shaft to this group: African Americans. And Donald Trump, never one to shy away from saying what he thinks, has made no bones about the disservice that the Obama presidency has done for African Americans. Trump said, We have an African-American president and the black youth, the African-American youth, has essentially all never done worse. You look at the unemployment in the 50s. You look at African-American people that are 30 and 35 and 40, in the height of their strength and lives, and theyre doing horribly. Unfortunately, for African Americans, Trump is right. Black unemployment in America is about double the national average which is slightly larger than the gap 15 years ago. One study found this alarming statistic: [O]ver the past 15 years, the average hourly wage of black workers fell by 44 cents, while white and Hispanic wages rose by 48 and 45 cents during the same period. Such wage gaps are often attributed to black Americans working in more part-time and temporary jobs, as well as jobs with high turnover rates, making it difficult for them to build careers. Whatever the cause for this economic discrepancy, one thing is clear: Obama certainly hasnt improved the situation for African Americans, and this (maybe rightly) could be considered a betrayal by African American leaders who went out of their way to get blacks to vote and to vote specifically for Obama. What do you think: Has Obama given African Americans the shaft or was this all beyond his control? Poster Comment: I remember when Harold Washington was elected as the first black Mayor of Chicago. After the election was over, the blacks were walking around still wearing "Washington for Mayor" buttons. It was really something. After he won the election, Vito Marzullo got up in the City Council and said, "We don't need no Washington." Washington died in office. Post Comment Private Reply Ignore Thread
