Title: Windows 10 will start automatically installing on older machines

Microsoft surprised people everywhere when they announced that Windows 10 would be a free upgrade for Windows 7 and 8.1 users. And while it's a good deal, those who haven't yet upgraded are having to deal with constant nagging by the company. And now they've stepped their game up yet again.

Not long ago, Microsoft started issuing notifications twice per day, telling users that they should upgrade their system. Apparently that's not been effective enough, as the company has decided to go ahead and make Windows 10 a “recommended” upgrade, through Windows Update. This means that if you haven't upgraded yet, you're going to go ahead and start the process.

I'm still using Windows 7 on a couple of my machines, because I'm not ready to upgrade. Thankfully, I always turn off automatic updates of any kind, and simply pick out the updates that I want to install. If you haven't done this, Windows will go ahead and start the installation process for Windows 10, whether you like it or not. You can go ahead and cancel it, but by then it will have already downloaded all of the necessary files, and it's only going to bug you about it later.

If you haven't turned off automatic updates, and you're not ready to upgrade, there are a couple of options for making this issue go away. Check out our earlier piece on the topic for more information on how to make the nagging notifications go away.

Maybe they need a lawsuit. I hate lawyers but I hate Windows 10 even more. When you update, it sends all your files, photos and documents up to the cloud. And sometimes it loses everything there.

For Windows 7.

To learn more about the types of updates that Microsoft publishes, go to the Microsoft updates terminology article on the Microsoft Help and Support website.

Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button . ...

In the left pane, click Change settings.

Under Important updates, choose the option that you want.

That's sad, good luck with it.

Surely somebody can tell us how to get this done. I've tried searching it in Youtube and there's always trouble -- screen details are fuzzy or you can't understand the Indian speaker.

Even webpages are a bad dream -- I try this stuff and it's simply not there

betanews.com/2015/09/11/r...ws-10-upgrade-files-from- windows-7-and-windows-8-x/

I find nothing called Clean Up System Files or Temprary Windows Installation files (the item looking most like it shows 0 mb size). Have tried, really tried, to get a handle on this indepentdently.

THANKS for the warning, Horse.

That's not a FF, it's sick.

But props to the donor's nonetheless.

Searching for 'how to stop windows 10' returned over 100M results; it can be done rather easily.

And your preferred method for getting it off your computer is what? Latest attempt = searching GWX folders and trying to delete them. Everything I try, the're some sassy new reason I can't, e.g. changing the folders' ownership -- in our out of an Adminstrator account.

I suspect you don't give a damn and just want to jeer.

I don't have a dog in the Win10 delete hunt.

This is sheer frustration. I finally deleted KB3035583, KB2952664, and KB3021917, the supposed updaters, but can't dump the GMX folder as myself or administrator, or myself running the process "As adminstrator". It always tells me I need permission from ourselves or "System". Can't find the $windows.~ws file even by click to Show Hidden Files, but think I've pretty well gutted $windows.~bt, whatever that is.

Yeah, I set it to stop automatic updates and downloads. Here are just two of the many webpages that haven't quite gotten me over:

I just blocked all automatic updates. Very easy to do.

1)Minimize all open windows. Click on Start.

2) Type Windows Update in the search box at the bottom.

3) Click on Windows Update ( top entry).

4) Click on Settings off to the left.

5) There is a drop down box. Click on it to select something that says notify me but I choose what updates I want.

PS: If you are updated, you have 30 days to go to Control Panel and select restore my old Windows. After that you are screwed.

That is a totally different issue. The thing's already downloaded on my HD, waiting to spring open and take over on whatever date MS set or signals.

This feels like the Twilight Zone. Nobody gets what I'm talking about -- look at the useless page a techno-wizard (a close friend and comrade) sent in response to my request for help:

www.howtogeek.com/218856/...windows-10-icon-shown-in- the-notification-tray/

AH..... it too IS useless. It only talks about hiding update reminders. But I can't be "screwed", there has to be a way to do this. It would see to involve re-assigning ownership of files as administrator in order to delete them, but I'm open to all relevant suggestions. (Reminder: all have failed so far.)

Am I the only one concerned about this here? Are the rest of you fine with MS forcing 10 on you, or are you Mac users (couldn't get much advice there either), or did you head this monster off at the pass?

Are we a community or a political mosh pit.

I hear you. What Microsoft is doing is infuriating. They KNOW that millions and millions of people DON'T WANT windows 10, but they make refusing the "upgrade" almost impossible. What works to thwart installation of Windows 10 this week might not work next week after Microsoft does a little update on your Windows 7 while you sleep.

This thought won't console, but I believe this whole thing is being driven by gov as much as by MS's lust for ever stratospheric profits. No doubt Gov wants everybody using Win 10 because of its enhanced surveillance/spy features.

I don't know the answer. I'll ask my son-in-law who is a geek; maybe he'll know. Apparently it's going to take more than this on-line village to solve your problem.

For anybody interested, further details. I think this is what worked beautifully

betanews.com/2015/09/11/remove-unwanted-windows-10-upgrade-files- from-windows-7-and-windows-8-x/

As for preventing the files being downloaded again, go to Start > Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall or change a program. Click View installed updates on the left. Use the search box to locate the following updates: KB3035583, KB2952664, and KB3021917 (Windows 7) orKB3035583 and KB2976978 (Windows 8). Right-click each one and select Uninstall. When done, go to System and security in the Control Panel, and select Windows Update > Check for updates. Right-click each of the above updates in turn and select Hide update.

Randomly arrived at this page getting back into 4um. The bottom line at this point seems to be what the Eudora listmom said -- no automatic installs. Anybody differing with that?

I confused downloading with installation in my initial hysteria, mebbe others did too.

Rivero on Monday's show: the problem of invasive downloading is or will be over soon as MS takes W10 to paid or subscription mode only -- free period is ending.

Caller says he hasn't done any Windows updating since SP2 3 years ago and everything's fine. Rivero suggests this could be a way to stave off other MS tricks.
