Title: McConnell claims GOP lawmakers will sacrifice White House, drop Trump ‘like a hot rock’ if he’s nominee

Republican voters need only look to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to understand that GOP lawmakers will willingly sacrifice the White House in order to save their own hides.

As the Republican Party begins to accept the very real possibility that front-runner Donald Trump will be their presidential nominee, McConnell “laid out a plan that would have lawmakers break with Mr. Trump explicitly in a general election,” The New York Times reported.

Despite his overwhelming victories thus far, leaders of the party think Trump will lose in the general election and will hurt Republicans down-ticket.

According to The Times, resistance to Trump “runs deep,” and a “desperate” behind-the-scenes “mission to save the party” from the real estate tycoon stalled out. As a result, “two campaigns have drafted plans to overtake Mr. Trump in a brokered convention.”

The newspaper said the effort to “unite warring candidates behind one failed spectacularly.”

An overture from Senator Marco Rubio to Mr. Christie angered and insulted the governor. An unsubtle appeal from Mitt Romney to John Kasich, about the party’s need to consolidate behind one rival to Mr. Trump, fell on deaf ears.

Kasich in particular has drawn the ire of GOP power brokers, having struggled to compete in the first four states to vote.

“He’s just flailing his arms around and having a wonderful time going around the country, and it just drives me up the wall,” a senior Republican senator said, according to The Times.

Several senator said McConnell was “especially vocal” about how Kasich was being irrational.

If Trump is the nominee, McConnell allegedly has told Senate colleagues, “We’ll drop him like a hot rock.”

And he may treat Trump’s loss in the general as a given, allowing senators to distance themselves from the candidate and run negative ads against him.

While still hopeful that Mr. Rubio might prevail, Mr. McConnell has begun preparing senators for the prospect of a Trump nomination, assuring them that, if it threatened to harm them in the general election, they could run negative ads about Mr. Trump to create space between him and Republican senators seeking re-election. Mr. McConnell has raised the possibility of treating Mr. Trump’s loss as a given and describing a Republican Senate to voters as a necessary check on a President Hillary Clinton, according to senators at the lunches.

All of which suggests that when it comes to political theater, the best is yet to come in the 2016 election. At the very least, it’s going to be an interesting spring and summer.

I won't hold my breath waiting for Canadian Cruz and Gay-boy Rubio to turn on McConnell........

Won't be the first time the Republican Party has refused to support the nominee-- Goldwater in '64. The Democrats did it too with McGovern.

McConnell should go hunting in Big Bend. Quail season ends the last of the month.

If they shaft Trump, then Trump will go 3rd party. That would probably make it harder for him to win, but it's still very possible. The R party will lose a lot of credibility and it may galvanize even more support from the biggest voting block out there, which are the non-voters.

Morons. He's the only one who can win.

Morons [GOP leadership, such as McConnell]. He's [Trump] the only one who can win.

Of course, you mean to say "Trump is the only one that can win for the GOP." I doubt he will win a thing for the People other than more facsism.

No.

I refuse to vote for or in a "Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus Show." The US government once existed based on a idyllic philosophy that controlled politics; today, it is the other way around.

I suppose the reasons are because we find rare instances or examples of altruism in modern America, anymore; just about everything presented in modern America is about government controls; hence, we are dependent on the government teat.

As Cynicom has intimated, devil or angel, Trump is our only chance for any change.

For better or worse, I'm with him.

I am 84 years olde.

Over those decades, I have lived and watched this country descend, down, down, ever down.

This "government" is a cancer that must be excised if this country is to survive.

For better or worse, Trump is the ONLY person that acknowledges this and is willing to try and save our country.

In this Trump can be a Hitler or a Churchill.

Both saved their countries when needed, one good, one bad.

I will take my chances with Trump, we all know the result with all of the others.

... Trump is our only chance for any change.

Reflect on your personal notes about the world around us, Lod; I want you to remember the world around you on sequential basis that shows the "changes" and especially regarding the US government.

The changes promised, election after election have been diametrically opposed to the fine speeches delivered by all politicians promising some sort of hogfest by the public. Correct? If so, what makes this election any different?

Trump's not a career politician, and the establishment hates his presence in their sandbox. The best two reasons that pop to mind.

This is a Lincoln speech in the House of Representatives that no politician will ever utter in our government.

"""" Any people anywhere being inclined and having the power have the right to rise up and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable, a most sacred right — a right which we hope and believe is to liberate the world. Nor is this right confined to cases in which the whole people of an existing government may choose to exercise it. Any portion of such people that can may revolutionize and make their own of so much of the territory as they inhabit."""

Speech in the United States House of Representatives (12 January 1848)

So what if the changes promised are not status quo. Does it mean Trump will be a Constitutionalist?

No. He'll rule by feel, submit to physical blackmail and be just another Bush once in office. But seeing him wipe the floor with the establishment this way will have been worth the price of admission and the matrix will (thank God) never quite be the same again.

More so than what we've had in decades. My major beef is his wanting Apple to unlock all their phones; that dog won't hunt. Let McAfee, or some 13yo unlock the one phone and leave the rest of the world's alone.
