Former Mississippi governor, Republican National Committee chairman Haley Barbours comments were the most tepid of bunch, saying little time remains to choose an alternative. He doubts a brokered convention will decide things, believing one candidate will win the necessary 1,237 votes to be nominated on the first ballot. Former House Speaker/failed presidential aspirant Newt Gingrich called the Republican run for the White House the season of an insurgent outsider - more concerned about the fate of the party and its congressional aspirants than who tops the ticket in November. Former Project for the New American Century (PNAC) co-founder neocon William Kristol is militantly anti-Trump. Past party moral lapses, intellectual failures and political defeats (pale) compare(d) with choosing Trump as our nominee, he railed. Republicans should ally to defeat him
(to) resist and reverse the current trend of events. Even if he becomes party nominee, nothing prevents an independent Republican candidacy in the general election, he stressed. Neocon American Enterprise Institute (AEI) foreign and defense policy studies vice president Danielle Pletka blasted Trump for hat(ing) free trade, hat(ing) immigrants, hat(ing) Muslims, and blam(ing) George W. Bush for 9/11. Hes not a typical GOP member, she ranted, claiming hell do lasting damage to the conservative movement and the Republican brand. Former Republican congressman Jim Leach co-sponsored the infamous Gramm-Leach-Bliley (Financial Services Modernization) Act of 1999, repealing Glass-Steagall - vital New Deal legislation separating commercial from investment banks and insurance companies among other provisions to curb speculation. He called Trump a flawed candidate, at the same time recognizing his momentum looks unstoppable. He suggests party bosses choose a former Pentagon warrior as running mate, someone like retired Joint Chiefs chairman Admiral Mike Mullen, a way to keep Americas war machine well served. Former neocon congressman Eric Cantor claims (m)any of (Trumps) ideas
would weaken our economy and security
We need to beat (him) by highlighting his lack of conservative credentials and offering better visions. In other words, choose a safe candidate, someone party bosses know they can control. Former GW Bush press secretary Ari Fleischer ludicrously calls Trump a populist (with) no fixed ideology - an independent
leas(ing) the title of Republican
a wrecking ball, endangering both wings of Americas one-party state. GOP bosses want anyone but Trump. A previous article speculated on whether theyll eliminate him by assassination or electoral rigging in upcoming primaries. Or if unable to stop him, maybe theyll quietly back Clinton in November as a better choice. Stephen Lendman lives in Chicago. He can be reached at lendmanstephen@sbcglobal.net.
