Last Sunday, it barred Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi and her high-level delegation from visiting Ramallah in the West Bank - a trip planned for the opening of an honorary consular office and talks with PA officials. A Jordanian military helicopter was scheduled to transport her cross-border. Israel blocked it, forcing her to dedicate the consulates opening in Amman - another outrageous affront on Tel Avivs deplorable rap sheet. Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesman Arrmanatha Nasir issued a statement, saying Israel did not grant the overnight permit for the helicopter cross-border flight, with no further elaboration. Netanyahu and Israels foreign ministry declined to comment. Both countries have no formal diplomatic relations. Marsudis Ramallah visit was blocked for declining to meet with Israeli officials in Jerusalem. On March 7, at the opening of an Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Jakarta, Indonesian President Joko Widodo said international patience for Israel has long run out. As part of the international community, (it) must immediately stop its illegal activities and policies in occupied territories. Indonesia and the Islamic world are ready to take concrete steps to push Israel to end its colonization of Palestine and its arbitrary actions in al-Quds al-Sharif (Arabic for Jerusalem). Indonesia has the worlds largest Muslim population, greater than any Middle East country. Baring its foreign minister from visiting Palestine give chutzpah new meaning. Numerous foreign consulates operate in Palestine. It has UN non-member observer state status. Arab country officials routinely visit Palestine without meeting with Israeli officials at the same time. Affronting officials of any country is unacceptable. Targeting the worlds largest Muslim country combines arrogance with stupidity. Stephen Lendman lives in Chicago.
