Are We Witnessing The End of Presidential Elections As We Know It?

John Thomas | March 9, 2016

The two party system has been a mainstay in American politics for years. So long that many people simply take it for granted and dismiss any serious thoughts of a third party as just a wasted vote. However, with the way the primaries are going so far this year, we may be seeing something that I wasn’t sure that I’d see in my lifetime:

The possible split of both major parties.

Here are the details: With Donald Trump leading in the rush for delegates to win the Republican primary, Ted Cruz has made it known that he is open to seeing a contested Republican convention to try to force the Republican Party to pick him over Trump if Trump is not able to gain a majority of the delegates. Some people are already seeing problems with this thinking and are saying that it would not work, that Trump would still get the nomination even if a contested convention happens. But, with Trump being such a polarizing figure, will supporters of Cruz, Rubio, and Carson support Trump if he gets the nomination or go third party, say Gary Johnson?

On the Democratic side, Hillary lost a major state (in this case, Michigan), yet her lead in delegates still grew over Bernie Sanders. Now, there is a logic to how this happened, having to do with the amount of support that Hillary had in winning Mississippi versus the amount of support that Sanders had in winning Michigan, but the bigger issue, in my mind, is the superdelegates that allow the Democratic establishment to select whoever they want regardless of the popular vote. That is leaning heavily towards Clinton, but Sanders supporters are a feisty bunch. If Sanders doesn’t get the nomination (and it looks like that is likely to be the case), will his supporters throw their weight behind Clinton or will they vote for a third party that matches their socialist agenda, thus preventing Clinton from getting enough of the vote to win in November?

I don’t have answers to these questions, but I’m curious to know how this whole mess is going to work out. How do you think it will work out and why?

I don't have the answers either, but it darn sure looks as if we are in for a real brouhaha. ;)
