Congressional Hardliners Want New Sanctions on Iran

by Stephen Lendman

Last year’s nuclear deal changed nothing. Longstanding US hostility toward Iran persists, wanting its sovereign independence replaced by pro-Western puppet governance - by color revolution or war, customary Washington strategy.

AIPAC wields enormous influence on Congress and US administrations. It relentlessly bashes Iran, making unfounded accusations, absurd ones like “support(ing) terrorist organizations…throughout the region” when nothing of the sort exists - at the same time, ignoring US/Israeli high crimes.

The 1996 Iran Sanctions Act expires on December 31, 2016. It’s been renewed before. AIPAC wants congressional members  extending it, along with imposing tough sanctions for recent Iranian missile tests - legitimate ones violating no international law or nuclear deal provision.

House legislation introduced in response to its tests authorizes “sanctions on persons (and firms) that transfer to or from Iran advanced conventional weapons or ballistic missiles, or technology, parts, components, or technical information related to advanced conventional weapons or ballistic missiles.”

It wants sale of so-called dual-use technologies or other support for its missile program halted. Undermining legitimate commerce is mostly about harming important sectors of Iran’s economy, including energy, automotive, construction and mining.

It’ll impede their developmental activities - not because of Iranian international law violations, solely to maintain decades of US hostility and support for Israel - part of Washington’s longstanding regime change strategy.

Claiming Iranian ballistic missile tests violate Security Council Resolution 2231 provisions, making last year’s nuclear deal binding under international law, is false.

Iran is prohibited only from developing ballistic or other missiles able to carry nuclear warheads.

Ballistic missiles used in its recent tests have no such capability No evidence suggests Tehran intends developing it.

Russia forthrightly backs Iran’s position, its veto power preventing unjustifiable Security Council sanctions.

Congress intends enacting them on its own. Last month, The Hill said imposing new sanctions on Iran “divides Democrats.”

Some party members believe ones in place are enough. Others want more. On Tuesday, House members “voted for a second time…to block the administration from lifting sanctions on Iranian entities unless it certifies they aren’t tied (to) terrorism or ballistic missile development,” The Hill explained.

Republican and Democrat Senate hardliners are working on new sanctions unrelated to Iran’s nuclear program.

Israel wants lifted sanctions reimposed. It wants Iran isolated by all means necessary, its economy made to scream.

As long as the Islamic Republic remains independent, free from Western control, Washington won’t stop trying to subvert it.
