[SOLVED] Windows 10 Bugs and Fixes

Category: Windows-10

Windows 10 was released to the public on July 29, 2015. It’s seen one major update and dozens of minor bug patches as of November. It still isn’t 100% bug free - just like any other major piece of software with millions of lines of code. Here are some of the most common problems people are encountering with Win 10, and some suggestions for fixing them...

The Rankin File

Fixing Windows 10 Flaws

Can’t upgrade from Windows 7 or 8.1? Sometimes the infamous "Get Windows 10" (also known as GWX) app won’t allow a Windows 10 installation even when a PC meets all the upgrade specs; or the GWX app never appeared in your system tray; or the GWX installation routine stalls repeatedly.

Here's the solution: Don’t use GWX. Instead, download Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool, burn the Windows 10 installation files to a USB stick or DVD, and run the Setup.exe program locally.

If you still have trouble, make sure that any hardware-based “Disable Execution Prevention (DEP)” is switched on in the BIOS; refer to your system’s manual for instructions. Yes, I said “ON” because that disables prevention of execution of unknown programs like Win 10 installation files. You don’t want “disable” turned “off.”

Fixing Windows 10 problems

Some users never got that November major update, which fixes lots of problems in Windows 10. To see if you got it, type “winver” in the Search box on the Start menu and run it. The latest version is 10586.XX; if you have version 10240 you did not get the November update. The solution is the Media Creation Tool, again. Download it now, even if you downloaded it when you first installed Win 10. The latest version will install the latest, fully updated version of Windows. Just make sure you set it to keep personal files and apps.

Windows Update isn’t working? First, make sure you have the latest version of Win 10 installed, the update issued in November. If that doesn’t do the trick, download and run Microsoft’s Windows Update Troubleshooter.

I had Windows 10 on here and then had some trouble and lost all my files and had to lose Windows 10 also. Now I am having trouble getting it back on my machine. I think I will try this tomorrow.

I keep getting a prompt for installing Windows 10 but have repeatedly refused it.

Are there GWX files on your hard drive? This is how to kill 'em.

[SOLVED] Windows 10

As I am, basically, pretty happy with Windows 7, didn't want this "upgrade" to Windows 10 and resented MS trying to force it into MY computer, I went HERE, ran the fix and got rid of the Windows 10 update. No more little window on the taskbar, no more popups asking me to install/upgrade to Windows 10 and no more worry of them installing it automatically.

I guess I am stuck with Windows 8 for the duration since 10 will not take on my machine for some reason when it did before. ;)

I had never heard of them, picked up their link in the comments section of an article about why Windows 10 sucks. The download only takes about two seconds and about 5 seconds more to get rid of Windows 10 installation software.

Never10 works on 8.1 also, just in case you didn't want to "upgrade".

GWX = "Get Windows 10". The stuff that downloads automatically includes files so named -- . checking quickly via the Windows key I see only pitiful shards of 'em remain on my HD.

Katrina, stunning genius of the Wordstar Listmoms, got me through it and insists it's not going to install without your permission, but who wants the stuff hanging around, right?

(Now that sounds like that good old guy. Used to watch him adding "happy little clouds" over lunch while twisting the dial of the last TV I owned [1992].)

"Important updates" urged today include the 2 main stinkers and, grouped with it, KB3123862

http://www.infoworld.com/article/3030211/microsoft-windows/experts- recommend-dont-install-microsoft-patch-kb-3123862.html

On Wednesday Microsoft released another mystery patch, KB 3123862, which appears as an optional, unchecked patch in Windows Update and closely parallels last year's reviled Get Windows 10 patch, KB 3035583 -- a patch we're still fighting.

The patch itself seems innocuous. According to the KB article it delivers "Updated capabilities to upgrade Windows 8.1 and Windows 7." The entire description for the patch consists of exactly one sentence:

The update adds capabilities to some computers that lets users easily learn about Windows 10 or start an upgrade to Windows 10....

Mystery solved -- uncheck and right-click to "hide" it with the other 2 baddies. The other 4 I've received all start with "Security update" so I'm going to assume, perhaps fecklessly, the term always indicates safe, non-W10 material.
