How Many Times A Week Should You Shower? The Answer May Surprise You...

Many people do not shower every day (Rex Pictures)

Here’s a tip to save time in the morning - don’t shower.

A recent survey found that as many as a third of all Brits do not shower every day, but they may not be as stinky as you think.

According to one expert, showers are really only needed about twice a week.

Dr Elaine Larson, an infectious disease expert at Columbia University School of Nursing, told Time magazine that a shower a day is not necessary - at least for your skin.

“People think they are showering or to be cleaner, but bacteriologically, that’s not the case,” she said.

In fact the more showers you have may cause more problems.

You can strip your body away of essential oils and increase your chance of infection as bathing will allow germs to enter cracked skin.

Dr C Brandon Mitchell, assistant professor of dermatology at George Washington University, agreed and said two showers each week was plenty.

‘Your body is naturally a well-oiled machine. A daily shower isn’t necessary,’ he said.

Poster Comment:

I usually shower two or three times a week unless I am working on a hot and dirty job.

I know a guy that recently moved to California. He called the shop where I work, and I got on the phone with him. I said, "How are things in the land of fruits and nuts?" He laughed. ;)

Perfumery was a big business, then people found out frequent bathing was a cheaper answer.

Modern French were the last to give in, to try soap and water.

One kid I work with has some bad BO. I asked him of he uses deodorant. He said he uses the spray on kind. I told him he needs to change brands. ;)

I wholeheartedly agree & concur with the articles findings. Matter of fact I discussed this very topic on a radio show a few months ago discussing our trip to europe. I didn't draw my conclusions from any study though.. just from Common sense. I don't believe at all that people need to shower daily. Matter of fact I actually look more handsome when I do not shower. Lol! Like the article says, it's something about the natural oils our body, skin & hair produces. To scrub all that off everyday with chemical-laden toxins that cause cancer is lunacy based on advertising.

After reading this article I decided to skip my daily shower today. I feel a bit grungy. Old habits die hard.

Change your shorts, socks, wash your face and pits, shave if you want to, and go for it.

We used to call that a Texas bath IIRC.

I loved grunge tunes in the 90s. That music reminded me of the stuff in the 70s. Growing up i always showered everyday. It was only later in life id day late 20s or 30s when I stopped showering everyday. Of course after particularly rigorous workout or dirty yardwork, that is different.

I'd say brushing teeth is still a daily requirement (flossing too). Becoming a truck driver (many years after my change of shower habits) also makes it very easy & convenient to skip showers. Lol.

Kevin Barrett said that this daily shower schtick originated in puritanical times and was a uniquely American thing. I bet that's true.

The old time cow hands would be lucky to bathe three or four times a year. ;)

grunge tunes in the 90s

We were working a grunge show in Chicago back then. There was some guy standing by the rail. He was wearing black lipstick. I told one of the guys on the crew, "You see that guy? If he comes down here I'm going to kick the shit out of him."

Then, when the band was going off stage at the end of the show, some guy jumped the rail in the corner and started to run along the first row of the dead seats. I paralleled him down below. He tried to jump thru the rails on top of the band. I came around the corner and clothes lined him. The glasses he was wearing went to the tip of his nose and the cap he had on went over his eyes.

My boss was standing on the opposite rear corner of the stage. He saw it all. He said, "Tex, that was an all pro move." He told the whole crew, "Tex clothes lined a guy that tried to jump on top of the band." ROTFLMAO!
