OZYMANDIAS of EGYPT

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said:—Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shatter'd visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamp'd on these lifeless things,
The hand that mock'd them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains: round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Percy Bysshe Shelley - 1817

In an era of power gone mad, sometimes it takes a great poet to make us understand the true nature of things.

Gold and silver are real money, paper is but a promise.

...and thus end all things ordained by man.

Who was Ozymandias -- from the wikipedia link:

"The name Ozymandias (or Osymandias) is generally believed to refer to Ramesses the Great (i.e., Ramesses II [born 1300 BC]), Pharaoh of the Nineteenth dynasty of Ancient Egypt."

I've already said too much.

Another tidbit, Pharoah statues depict the rules with a serene gaze, Shelly created the device of the ruler's sneer to further make his point about the temporary nature of power.

The Naulahka
Rudyard Kipling

The twain were woven—gold on sackcloth—twined
Past any sundering till God shall judge
The evil and the good.
Now it is not good for the Christian’s health to hustle the Aryan brown,
For the Christian riles, and the Aryan smiles and he weareth the Christian down;
And the end of the fight is a tombstone white with the name of the late deceased,
And the epitaph drear: “A Fool lies here who tried to hustle the East.”

Mr Rumsfeld said the emergence of populist leaders through elections in Latin America was "worrisome".

Then more like a Mussolini Ozymandias than a Pharaoh Ozymandias.
