JUST imagine it.

You are sitting at a cafe in Sydney having a date with a woman sitting in a cafe in Melbourne. She is in front of you. You can hear, see and touch her but you’re in different states, or countries. This ladies and gentlemen is the future of online dating.

The dating landscape now only requires a strong network connection, even when going out to dinner with a potential partner. Think about how much you would save on the bill, robots can’t eat.

Australian media agency Atomic212 saw the growth of both online dating and the use of ‘robots’ in Australia simultaneously and decided they would be a match made in heaven. So they are giving someone an opportunity to win a date with Lucy, the robot.

The robot itself is a Double, a telepresence robot that you can control from wherever you are as long as you have an internet connection.

Lucy is actually an employee at Atomic212, her name is Lucy Kelly. She recently made headlines for being the first “robot” to purchase an iPhone when she set up her machine in a line outside Apple’s Australian flagship store in Sydney.

She can control the robot from the her home or office. The iPad placed on the ‘head’ of the robot works as a sort of Skype, her face and voice are there in real-time and she can see and hear you and her surroundings.

We interviewed Lucy the Robot face to face.

Ms Kelly said the robot has the potential to help fill in the voids of intimacy that tend to come with online dating, particularly a long distance dating.

“When you can see someone face to face, there is a personal element to it,” she said.

She is not blind to the fact that this isn’t exactly a common place practice in the dating world at the moment, but she said you can’t rule it out.

“When online dating started it was considered unorthodox and now that’s the norm.” Atomic212 use the robot regularly in their office for meetings and are running this competition as a fun social experiment and as a comment on the future of dating.

Uhhh...

“The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out... without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane, intolerable.” ~ H. L. Mencken
