The funeral for a 21-year-old woman killed by a drunk illegal cost more than the illegal’s bail, the victim’s mother revealed. Michelle Root, mother of Sarah Root, revealed the events surrounding her daughter’s death on her graduation day by an illegal alien police say was drag racing while intoxicated in Omaha, Neb., earlier this year.
But a local judge set his bail at “less than the amount it cost to bury my baby,” she told Congress on Tuesday.
“We are not against immigration,” Root said. “Sarah’s grandmother was an immigration from Vienna, Austria.”
“She did it right, she did it the right way. That’s all we’re asking.”
It’s unlikely the illegal, 19-year-old Eswin Mejia, will ever face trial, Root revealed, because immigration officials refused to pick him up and it’s likely he has since fled back to his native country of Honduras.
“Only after a floor speech, multiple letters, and hearing questions from Senators from Nebraska and Iowa, as well as media attention and concerns raised by the Root family, did Immigration and Customs Enforcement finally acknowledge that they should have taken Mejia into custody,” Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) stated.
Her fellow Iowa senator, Chuck Grassley, said the case “has shed light on the breakdown between the federal government and state and locals.”
However, also present at the congressional hearing was Bishop Minerva G. Carcaño, the immigration spokesperson for the United Methodist Church, who spoke out against Root, claiming it was “unjust” to take “isolated, certainly very tragic incidents” to “implicate” millions of illegals.
But in response, Rep. Raul Labrador (R-Idaho) said her “disgusting” statement showed “no consideration” for Root’s pain.
