Unaffordable Housing in America

by Stephen Lendman

According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) report, titled “Out of Reach 2015,” income inequality in America makes housing increasingly unaffordable.

“(I)n no state, metropolitan area, or county can a full-time worker earning the prevailing minimum wage afford a modest two-bedroom apartment,” it said.

At $7.25 an hour, the federal minimum wage, it would take 112 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, meaning all work and sleep with no time for anything else.

Stagnant wages, declining benefits, high inflation (8.8% according to economist John Williams, not the phony 1.1% CPI), and protracted Main Street Depression conditions created a deplorable situation for growing millions.

Not only isn’t America beautiful, modestly priced housing is increasingly unaffordable. According to NLIHC president and CEO Diane Yentel, “(t)he federal government has the resources to end the shortage of housing affordable to the lowest income families.”

“It is simply a matter of how those resources are allocated. Instead of subsidizing the mortgages of higher income people, we must invest in making rental housing more affordable and available to those most in need of assistance.”

Trillions of dollars go for warmaking and benefits for America’s privileged class. Most others are increasingly on their own. Millions are one lost paycheck away from hunger, homelessness and despair.

The world’s richest country cares little about its most disadvantaged, why poverty is a growth industry and one in four working aged Americans have no jobs. Potemkin village illusion conceals reality.

In contrast, million dollar book deals and 6-figure speech payments await Obama when he leaves office in January - already very rich, about to become super-rich, cashing in on serving monied interests throughout his tenure, waging class war on most others.

Problems affecting ordinary Americans don’t concern him. An affluent lifestyle awaits. Reportedly he’ll move into an 8,200 square foot, 9-bedroom luxury home in Washington’s upscale Kalorama neighborhood, two miles from the White House.

Former Clinton aide Joe Lockhart owns the mansion. Obama will pay $22,000 in monthly rent. It would take an average low-wage US worker up to 12 or more years to cover its annual rental cost - provided he or she didn’t eat, own a car or have medical, transportation, or utility expenses.

The community is home to Washington’s political elites. Former presidents William Howard Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Warren Harding, Herbert Hoover and Franklin Roosevelt lived there.

In March, Obama said he’ll remain in Washington at least until his youngest daughter finishes Sidwell Friends School - uncaring about the global human misery he caused, unaccountable for war crimes too appalling to ignore.

Anybody is free to move to Detroit and buy a fixer-upper HOUSE for less than $100

What we need a Free Trade Zone law for urban areas. We exempt Chinese companies from US laws so they will employ Americans and ship products to China to make our trade deficit look better. Venezuela is doing that with farm land so they are shipping out their rice and beans while the natives are rioting for food.

We can have an Urban Trade Zone for whites to colonize Detroit. We could buy up 10,000 homes at less than $1,000 each. Exempt the new residents from US laws regarding segregation, firearms, vaccinations and education. That way they could have segregated schools and allow white 8 year-olds with training to carry weapons. The whites would be exempt from Detroit and Michigan taxes. Maybe we could post snipers at the entrance areas and shoot into black Detroit at anyone bothering whites. Or have white soldiers on patrol in black Detroit who would treat the locals exactly like Israelis treat Palestinians.

To have this work whites who take SSRIs and other dangerous drugs could not move in.

I actually took 2 days last year & looked at houses in Kansas city MO & KS that costed literally $3000 to $7000 each. It was surreal walking thru these places and neighborhoods. It was like some sort of futuristic burnt out Mel Gibson or will Smith movie. I've never seen anything like it and will never forget it. What a scandalous, shocking shithole this nation has become.

Don't forget that Doug took a little walk in Detroit after he returned from Vietnam. He said Detroit was more dangerous than Vietnam.

Now they want to trade with the Vietnamese. And the U.S. Navy may soon be back at Cam Rahn Bay to dissuade the Chinese in their imperial expansion in the South China Sea. ;)

Wow, all these years and I never realized you were in vietnam. I'm sure you have a lot of good stories. Have you recorded them, in written or audio/ video form? If not, you should. You should actually write a book because you have a very unique and interesting perspective. I'd buy a copy and promote it!

Years ago when I did a radio show in Hollywood I interviewed a nam vet who had some incredible stories. It was a very powerful show. One of these years i will learn how to put all of these audio cassette tapes into digital format.

The one of the LAPD starting the riot at the lakers championship game in june 2000 is a horrifying classic. It was actually a life changing event.

Thanks for the kind words.

I was a kid when I went to Vietnam. I was young and dumb or I might have stayed home. At one point I had decided not to go to Vietnam but my dad convinced me to go. (Said he'd disown me if I refused). Once there my primary objective was to come back home. I never liked the military or the people that made a career of it. I felt like most of the "lifers" were a bunch of drunken parasites that couldn't make it anywhere else.

I became more opposed to the war after going to Vietnam. My dog tags stated my religion as Catholic and I quit wearing them, quit being a Catholic, refused to enter a church, and I felt like a criminal for being a part of the war effort.

It was an experience that formed my negative opinion of the American government and those selected for positions of authority. We turned Vietnam into a whore house (literally) and in the process really showed our ass. I learned and understood why much of the world despises us.

I never understood why we were there and the actions of the typical American G.I. were repulsive. Americans in general treated the Vietnamese people poorly and without respect for their humanity. Many G.I.s became heroin addicts, many died, many were wounded and I can't think of anything positive that resulted from that war.

At any rate, when I got back to the States my primary objective was to get out of the service and when that goal was accomplished I never looked back. I had no bad dreams or flashbacks. As a matter of fact, I really never adapted to the military way of life and had very little desire to dwell on it once discharged.

It's almost like I was never there since it was so long ago, but this post has caused me to recall some things I hadn't thought about for 40 some years.

I'm sure the Vietnam experience had a large impact upon my life choices that ultimately led me to quit the established system when the opportunity presented itself. I have no regrets and feel better every day about the decision to shun Uncle Sambo and thank God every day for my blessings and His protection.

EDIT: One last thing. I wouldn't have ever imagined that this country would or could be turned into the shit hole it has become. Just what were we fighting for ?
