Trovagene is one of many “liquid biopsy” stocks trying to get approval for and market their tests, with cancer being generally the most sought-after diagnostics market for most of them. Their differentiating factor is that they use urine, not blood, so they claim better results partly because it’s easier to repeatedly test larger volumes. P.S. If you’re curious about some of the other “liquid biopsy” stocks that have been teased by newsletters, the most recent big push I saw was over the winter when a couple newsletters touted OCX and FMI — though there are certainly several other contenders in the “new and aspiring diagnostics” space, and I expect we’ll continue to see at least several diagnostics and testing companies, from new-age breathalyzers to advanced blood tests, pitched each year. Comments: CuriousJoe says: TROV went above $10 some time during 2015, cratered to $3 early 2016, recovered to almost $7 and then cratered once more because of the firing/forced departure of the CEO and CFO. It has since “recovered”: Barely holding above $5. Shah Gilani’s tout FMI is even worse than a broken clock: Has been bottom scraping since Travis’s brilliant sleuthing exposed it as FMI. At least with TROV one could swing trade. Not to mention TRXC touted by yet another Money Map Press guy. Michael Jorrin (aka Doc Gumshoe) says: I can’t comment on the merits of the stock, but I have doubts that the acceptance of a quick & easy cancer screening method by the clinic & the general public will be wildly enthusiastic. Detecting cancer DNA in the urine (or blood for that matter) is not tantamount to a diagnosis. It might point to what type of cancer & where it might be, but further testing will be necessary – imaging, biopsy, perhaps exploratory surgery. It would only lead directly to a specific treatment if a targeted therapy existed for cancer with that precise genetic fingerprint. The issue with any screening test is, what’s the next step if the test is positive? I personally would refuse to have such a test, as I would refuse to undergo a full body scan. Something is apt to show up, with no clear indication as to a course of action, except more and more testing. This is not to say that eager investors with faith in cutting-edge technology won’t bid up the stock. alanh says: Sounds like something some unscrupulous MD’s might routinely recco to drum up some ‘more tests’ business. Mark E. says: I am predicting that OPKO’s new PSA test (4Kscore) will soon become standard of care and covered by insurance. This is a superior test to current PSA tests and has been shown to be highly predictive for clinically significant prostate cancer. Is there a urine test that IS invasive?
Well I suppose if you're going to be picky, would be invasive if you had to collect the urine via a catheter. But non-invasive used here to differentiate technique from current, mostly used, blood, biopsy, etc., tests. Even ultrasound, CAT scans could be considered invasive.
I figured that, but the title struck me as odd when I first saw it.
