West Australian... A green tree frog flown across outback Queensland for life-saving treatment after being run over by a lawn mower will return home next week.

The frog, believed to be two to three years old, was mown over by a woman in the front yard of her Mt Isa home in April.

The distraught woman called family who put her in touch with a specialist frog hospital several hundred kilometres away in Cairns.

That sparked a mad scramble to transport the frog on a regional airline, including a trip through airport security and a courier drive.

"We weren't sure whether the security x-rays were going to harm him but he made it," Frog Safe president Deborah Pergolotti told AAP.

The frog arrived with an infected slash on the back of it's head, with doctors later discovering two parasitic infections.

But despite permanent damage to one eye, he's made a healthy recovery.

"He's gained weight and is eating well, he's an extremely lucky animal," Ms Pergolotti said.

While the frog's tale may seem unique, the hospital has treated thousands of amphibians brought in from across the north half of the state since opening in 1998.

Ms Pergolotti says the vast majority of frogs admitted to the hospital were suffering from the flow-on effects of pollution around populated areas.

"Chemicals in sub-lethal doses affect their immune systems which makes them a vacuum for every problem, parasites and disease," she said.

"Once that happens, they get injured which people see and bring to us.

"It's not picked up until then ... you're not going to notice a sick frog."

Ms Pergolotti says she's seen a decline in frogs numbers around Cairns, particularly as the urban sprawl encroaches on their natural habitat.

She says more research needs to be done to determine the affects of chemicals.

However, this lucky frog will fly back to Mt Isa next week, once paperwork has been filled out.

"You used to be able to put them in an ice cream container, which then sat up with the pilot in the cockpit," Ms Pergolotti said.

"It's a lot more complicated than that now ... times have changed."
