The change comes in the aftermath of the massacre at the Orlando gay nightclub in which 50 people were shot dead in a terrorist attack for which Islamic State claimed responsibility. In a statement following the killings, Trump said that President Barack Obama should resign for his refusal to even say the words "radical Islam" Trump said that "If we do not get tough and smart real fast, we are not going to have a country anymore. Because our leaders are weak, I said this was going to happen – and it is only going to get worse. I am trying to save lives and prevent the next terrorist attack. We can't afford to be politically correct anymore." The real estate mogul also made use of the fact that the terrorist was the son of Afghani-born parents to emphasize a common anti-immigrant theme during his campaign, pointing out that the U.S. admits more "than 100,000 lifetime migrants from the Middle East each year. Since 9/11, hundreds of migrants and their children have been implicated in terrorism in the United States." Trump also warned about future dangers of this policy, because "Hillary Clinton wants to dramatically increase admissions from the Middle East, bringing in many hundreds of thousands during a first term – and we will have no way to screen them, pay for them, or prevent the second generation from radicalizing." In the immediate aftermath of the attack, Trump had also tweeted: Trump was criticized for his remarks by many on social media, including Republicans, especially for the tweets immediately after the massacre, Time reports. The backlash was harsh, with many saying Trump is self-centered even in moments of tragedy. Other comments criticized him for declaring it an Islamic-inspired terrorist attack and trying to score political points before the facts of the incident were even clear.
