US-Backed Terrorists in Syria Commit High Crimes with Impunity

by Stephen Lendman

In its new report, titled “ ‘Torture was my punishment:’ Abductions, torture and summary killings under armed group rule in Aleppo and Idleb,” Amnesty International (AI) reported on what’s been well documented before.

Terrorists in Syria, backed by Washington, NATO, Israel and other regional rogue states freely commit high crimes of war and against humanity with impunity.

Media scoundrels largely ignore them, wrongfully blaming Assad, courageously combating foreign invaders, imported death squads wanting his country destroyed, its people slaughtered and brutalized.

AI’s report focused on Aleppo, Idleb and surrounding northern Syria areas, saying “(a)rmed groups (aka terrorists) carried out a chilling wave of abductions, torture and summary killings…support(ed) by…Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the USA…”

According to AI’s Philip Luther, civilians living in terrorist-controlled areas experience “constant fear of being abducted if they criticize the conduct of armed groups in power or fail to abide by the strict rules that some have imposed.”

“In Aleppo and Idleb today, armed groups have free rein to commit war crimes and other violations of international humanitarian law with impunity” - including and other forms of abuse.

“States that are members of the International Syria Support Group including the USA, Qatar, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, which are involved in negotiations over Syria, (failed to) pressure armed groups to end such abuses and comply with the laws of war.”

Efforts aren’t made to “cease any transfer of arms or other support to groups implicated in committing war crimes and other gross violations.”

AI documented 24 abductions by terrorist groups in Aleppo and Idleb governorates between 2012 and 2016. “Victims included peaceful activists and even some children, as well as minorities targeted solely because of their religion.”

Five cases of torture after abduction were discussed, victim names changed to protect them.

“Ibrahim” said he “taken to the torture room. They placed (him) in the shabeh position, hanging (him) from the ceiling from (his) wrists so that (his) toes were off the ground.”

“Then they started beating (him) with cables all over (his) body… After the shabeh they used the dulab technique (beating him with sticks after forcing his legs and head into a car tire).” Later he was abandoned on the side of a road.

“Halim” recounted his ordeal, saying “(w)hen (he) refused to sign the confession paper the interrogator ordered the guard to torture (him).”

He “used the bisat al-rih technique…plac(ing) (his) hands above (his) head, and forced (him) to lift (his) legs in a perpendicular position.”

“He then started beating (him) with cables on the soles of (his) feet. (He) couldn’t bear the pain so (he) signed the paper.”

“Issa” said he stopped posting Facebook comments after Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists threatened him. “They are in control of what we can and cannot say. You either agree with their social rules and policies or you disappear.”

AI documented abductions of three teenaged boys. They’re still missing. It has evidence of summary killings. Once charged, victims are defenseless. Flagrant international law violations follow with impunity.

Washington bears full responsibility for raping and destroying Syria, one of its many imperial victims, waging endless wars, spurning peace. Its rogue partners share blame.

Assad deserves universal support for courageously defending his nation and people against foreign supported imported death squads.

AI stopped short of explaining what’s most important of all. The scourge of US imperialism threatens humanity with possible extinction.
