OSLO, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Norway said Monday in a feasibility study report that it is possible to realize a full-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) chain in the Nordic country within 2022, two years later than it had expected.

"The feasibility studies are an important part of this work and show that realising a full-scale CCS chain in Norway within 2022 is possible and at lower costs than for projects considered in Norway earlier," Norway's Minister of Petroleum and Energy Tord Lien was quoted as saying in a statement when presenting the report.

"Wide deployment of CCS is necessary for the world to reach its climate goals. The most important goal of a full-scale project in Norway is to contribute with knowledge and learning so CCS can be deployed in industry across the world," he said.

The Norwegian government said in 2013 that it would invest on a broad front to develop cost-effective technology for carbon capture and storage and seek to construct at least one full-scale carbon capture demonstration plant by 2020.

Norway's CCS strategy was presented in the government's budget proposition for 2015, which covered a wide range of activities, including the assessment of potential full-scale CCS projects in the country.

The aim of the feasibility studies was to identify at least one technically feasible CCS chain with corresponding cost estimates and the results showed that it is technically feasible to realize several alternatives in Norway, including capture, transport and storage of carbon dioxide.

According to the feasibility study report, the next step in the project should be a combined concept and Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) phase, which would be announced as a competitive process in the autumn of 2016.

Contracts for the concept and FEED phase could be signed first quarter 2017 and the work could be finished early in the autumn of 2018.

This work will form the basis for the quality assurance and decision processes for an investment decision, which is planned for the spring of 2019, and a full-scale CCS project could then be realized in 2022, the report said. Editor: Tian Shaohui

Probably capture more taxpayer dollars than carbon.

Ha! Let's hope that since Norway is among the least stupid and suicidal white countries there's some hope for this plan working properly.

The atmosphere weighs a "tonne" on each of us. So if human activity produces 30 billion tons a year and each of us takes up 1/1 square meter, wouldn't that be 11583.065 square miles -- 115,830 every decade, about 1/1500th of the earth's surface?
