DOT investigating fatal crash in which self-driving car slammed into tractor-trailer

The dash of a Tesla Model S.

The U.S. DOT announced last week it’s investigating a fatal Florida crash in which a Tesla Model S — driving in the vehicle’s self-driving Autopilot mode — failed to brake and slammed into the side of a Class 8 tractor-trailer, killing the occupant of the Tesla. Tesla vehicles are all-electric sedans that can operate in semi-autonomous modes in certain situations.

The truck involved in the crash pulled in front of the Tesla to take a left across a divided highway. The Tesla’s Autopilot system failed to brake to avoid the collision and drove underneath the truck’s trailer. The trailer’s “white side…against a brightly lit sky” caused the car’s Autopilot system to fail to register the full-sized tractor-trailer crossing the highway, Tesla said in a blog post on its site.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Defects has announced an inquiry into the fatal crash, which took place in early May.

New collision mitigation system can take over truck’s steering to evade rear-end crashes

ZF, the company who jointly built the system, says it is the next "critical step" in bringing autonomous trucks to real-world application. The system should ...

Tesla says its Autopilot system is still in public beta testing, and users are warned before using the system that the technology is new and that drivers should not take their hands off the wheel. “When drivers active Autopilot, the acknowledgment box explains, among other things, that Autopilot ‘is an assist feature that requires you to keep your hands on the steering wheel at all times,’ and that ‘you need to maintain control and responsibility for your vehicle’ while using it,” Tesla writes in its blog.

Reports indicate the 40-year-old driver of the Tesla, Joshua Brown, was watching a movie at the time of the crash, but not via Tesla’s in-dash entertainment system.

Tesla says this is the first fatal accident in more than 130 million miles of Autopilot testing — well above the U.S. average of 1 death per 90 million miles and the worldwide average of one death per 60 million miles.

Poster Comment:

This involved a self driving car, but Ive also posted many times how these hype stories are completely bogus, as admitted by Mercedes itself, who makes the so called self driving trucks. The manufacturers themselves admit that the so-called 'self driving' trucks were never and will never be operated without a driver.

Self-driving car hits tractor-trailer, kills passenger

It wasn't a passenger, but the driver. As much as that term applies.

The manufacturers themselves admit that the so-called 'self driving' trucks were never and will never be operated without a driver.

If there is nothing for the driver to do but supervise the auto-pilot, then inevitably, the driver will pay less and less attention to what the AP does to the point of falling asleep.

Is this a hype story or a news report? Is it bogus or true.

"will never be operated without a driver" = without a driver driving and controlling at all times? =Without a driver monitoring all auto-drive functions?

If this guy got killed as described, it sounds like he was letting the car handle itself to some extent it clearly wasn't technologically read for.

Whatever you're meaning by all this, it's quite interesting.

this story is completely true, so called 'self driving cars' can not and will never function in society. This story illustrates that.

the hype stories I referred to was in the poster comment section and my comment was regarding the stories about self driving big rogs. the news story I posted here was about a self driving car which crashed into a big rig.

I was referring to something different. several times here people have posted from conspiracy blogs claiming that 'self driving big rigs will put millions of American truckers out of work!" etc.

as I explained, apparently not clearly enough, was that, like this incompetent self driving car in this news story, the alleged self driving big rigs are not only incomoetent, but they do not exist, have never existed, and will never exist. the company Daimler has exhibited an 'enhanced' big rig with special sensors etc which will supposedly allow big rig drivers to perform other tasks while driving. But as even Daimler explained at their trade show in vegas when they showcased the trucks, the trucks are not and will never be intended to be 'driverless.'

That is the difference between these dangerous self driving cars and the made- up 'self driving big rigs' that conspiracy and doomsday blogs blather on about.

since I'm in the industry I go to the actual source and read the specs on all this stuff when it interests me.

Aren't self-driving vehicles called trains?

you know whats interesting? I was riding a train system recently and saw several drivers, they were even changing shifts. but even if a train were driverless, which I don't think they are, at least they are on tracks so they cant cause so much havock as a vehicle on the road.

You've been to Europe; you saw what a good train system is like. Yet for some reason we don't have them here. By design?

maybe, . at least where I'm from, in cali, they have never built a train system because everyone has cars and freeways. they should maintain and expand the freeways, imo. although they do actually have a pretty darn good 'metrolink' system in so cal which takes commuters here and fro. ive taken it to the airport several times and was happy with it. it is new to me, because I never took mass transit my whole life.

mexico actually has a very good subway, train, bus and cab system.

new York and san fran does too, from my experience.

I still prefer my own car though. I will never prefer sitting next to mass crowds of strangers to get to where I'm going. it just seems un-American, lol. :-)
