Yesterday's WRH show was typically JAM-PACKED. Among numerous other good points, Mike said he never uses automatic checkouts for several reasons -- notably that it's costing someone their job, right around 1:03:00 here:

While we're on the subject, if you want to use a discount card, the grocery chain store may be willing to just hand you one. As needed, tell 'em you'll fill out the form at home -- but don't do it.

Self-checkouts are obnoxious serf training devices that I (while being a self-proclaimed serf) refuse to use ... people should "accidentally" drop a full jar of pickles on the scanner glass (oops) ! [Kosher dills for irony effect].

Do you have to do that, or can you just start using it anyway?

Clarkson used to tell us to endorse checks "Teddy Kennedy" when sending them third-party to pay utilities etc -- said it worked fine for him :-)

Nope, it works just fine at the local grocer.

Most people would use automatic checkouts if they receive a 2% and no discount with regular checkout. That is what I would do if I owned Walmart. Then in six months, after almost everyone used the automatic checkouts, I would remove the discount and all regular checkouts so that anyone not using the automatic checkouts would have to go to customer service and wait inline for 15 to 30 minutes. And, since people don't like to wait, very few would go to customer service.

I am not opposed to automation if that lower the cost and therefore the price I pay. If Walmart was to do that and if automated checkout saved them 2 or 3 percent, after they got people trained to use automated checkout, at first their profits would go up. However, then other places would use automated checkout and lower their prices 2 or 3 percent which in turn would force Walmart to lower their prices.

So all that matters to you on this is saving a few more pennies per dollar -- not that whole classes of your fellow citizens are going to be thrown out of work.

Nope, it works just fine at the local grocer.

I used to use my late mother's Kroger card until I met Marla. Most of their sale prices (which can be substantial) are contingent on having the card. The plus side is that they send you targeted coupons in the mail, again good savings. The local liquor store buged me to get one every time I go in. I signed up using Marla's name. Didn't bat an eye when I told them my name was Marla (she loves junk e-mail, gets 1,000+/day). If I live to be 200, I might save $100.

As far as the self-checkouts, no way. I read several articles that the security tapes are sent to third-world countries for analysis and the police raid you as a shoplifter if'n they make a mistake (or you), guilty until proven innocent. The loss of jobs was primary until I learned of the abuses.

Edit: Plus, I think you need the card to get the senior citizen discount on Tuesday (at least here in FWA). I think it's 5 or 10%.

Basically that is true. Technology advancements that have thrown people out of work has always been a good thing. That is because most end up getting work in more productive areas. There is not much demand for buggy whips anymore because cars have replaced horses and that is a good thing because it now costs less to travel.

Tractors have replaced mules and farming by hand so now 4% of the population can feed all the people when 100 years ago it took half the population working on farms to feed all the people and that is a good thing because the cost of food is much less.

Backhoes can do the work of twenty people with picks and shovels and that is a good thing because the cost of building roads, houses, etc. is less.

Offshoring, socialism and the invasion have gutted the job market. Flipping burgers and punching cash registers are what people have turned in desperation - - and now automation's moving in on all that and much more. What jobs will be left?

Government with all their regulations and laws, not wages is the reason jobs move out of the country. In the past automation and machines made workers more efficient and productive. However, with the advancement in computers and there robotics, in a few years, it may be that multitask robots with the ability to speak and understand language will replace tellers and most low wage jobs in fast food.

It's already underway. Ever hear of an ATM?

Or as people keep cringeworthily putting it, "an ATM machine".

In movies and TV shows I have heard about ATM machines. However, not even once in my life have I ever used one. I'm not even certain I have seen one except in videos. Therefore, if I am like most people, ATM don't have much effect on employment. Can ATMs even talk and understand language?

You're not like most people. Millions of ATM transaxions take place every day. They talk in writing and rob thousands and thousands of people of jobs.

Of course you are like most people in saying "so this is a problem alreddy?" Not judging you, just conversing like usual.

My impression from movies I have watched, ATMs also operate outside of regular banking hours and I think they may even exist where there is no bank. Forty years ago, before computers were capable of doing much, there could not have been any ATMs and bank tellers only worked at banks and during banking hours. Therefore, I don't see how ATMs eliminate any jobs that didn't exist anyway.

Out here they closed the branch bank and put the ATM inside the door at the main bank. It is a double door entry with outer door and an inner door for security. ;)
