Obama Tried Preventing Netanyahu’s 2015 Reelection by Stephen Lendman
It’s no surprise both leaders don’t like each other, the rift at times public.
Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy once told Obama he “cannot bear” Netanyahu, calling him “a liar.”
Obama responded, saying “(y)ou're fed up, but I have to deal with him every day.” Ahead of his 2015 reelection, he broke protocol, addressing Congress without an administration invitation - lobbying against the now implemented Iran nuclear deal.
A Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs inquiry learned the State Department gave a so-called OneVoice “international grassroots” group around $350,000 to prevent Netanyahu’s 2015 reelection - funds allegedly used for voter outreach efforts, calling for “anyone but Bibi.”
America notoriously meddles in the internal affairs of other countries - allies and adversaries, wanting regimes and leaders it controls, preventing or removing others.
Likud’s minister of Jerusalem affairs, Ze’ev Elkin, slammed Washington’s “callous intervention in the Israeli democratic (sic) process, which only proves the necessity for transparency laws for foreign state funding of political organizations.”
“The people in Israel choose a government that will look after the national and security interests of the citizens of the State of Israel, and not to carry out the dangerous plans that foreign states are trying to arrange for us.”
According to Likud MK Yoav Kisch, inquiry findings “prove conclusively that there was a crude, clear intervention from the US State Department in the internal affairs of Israel.”
“This is scandalous, a callous attempt to replace the government of Israel through funding from the US government.”
What precisely was done isn’t clear. The Senate inquiry found no evidence of anti-Netanyahu subversion despite a campaign initiated to do it.
