Newt Gingrich accused the Bush family of behaving “childishly” by skipping this week’s Republican National Convention and refusing to endorse Donald Trump.
The former speaker of the House, who was widely considered one of Trump’s top three vice presidential contenders, made the comments today on “Good Morning America” in Cleveland, the site of the convention.
“The reason people nominated Donald Trump is because they weren’t happy, and frankly, I think the Bushes are behaving childishly,” Gingrich told George Stephanopoulos on “GMA.” “Jeb [Bush] lost. Former President George H.W. Bush and his son former President George W. Bush have no plans to endorse Trump, their representatives told ABC News in May.
“President Bush does not plan to participate in or comment on the presidential campaign,” the younger Bush's spokesman, Freddy Ford, said.
Jim McGrath, the spokesman for the elder Bush, said the 41st president is out of politics.
“At age 91, President Bush is retired from politics,” McGrath said in an email. “He naturally did a few things to help Jeb, but those were the exceptions that proved the rule.”
Jeb Bush, a former Florida governor and son and brother of the former presidents, left the race in February.
Bush 41 endorsed the GOP presidential nominee in the previous five election cycles.
The three Bushes aren’t the only no-shows at the Republican National Convention this week. Former nominees Mitt Romney and John McCain won’t be attending. Former rival John Kasich, who happens to be Ohio’s governor, will also be absent.
