And Then the Balloons Dropped, and Then the World Started Coming to an End

Hail Trump.

CLEVELAND, OHIO — He wanted to say it.

He pursed his lips. Bit the inside of his lip. Pursed his lips again. Thrust his tongue against the side of this cheek. Swung his shoulders back and forth. Pursed his lips again.

He really wanted to say it. But this was the new Donald Trump. When Code Pink protester Medea Benjamin interrupted his acceptance speech—or, more exactly, when the chants of U-S-A-! from delegates trying to shout down Benjamin's protest interrupted his speech—Trump stopped and simply stood at the podium for several long moments. He did not point and snarl, "Get 'em!, Get 'em out!" Instead, he stood for several long moments, twitching against every fiber in his being, waiting until the Cleveland PD had Benjamin corralled before posing a rhetorical question: "How great are our police, and how great is Cleveland?"

In a speech where he promised to do everything but make the trains run on time, Trump positioned himself as the Master of the Law and Order Universe. There's going to be no more yelling—he will simply lift a finger and make it so.

There's going to be no more yelling—he will simply lift a finger and make it so.

"The crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon—and I mean very soon—come to an end," Trump promised. "Beginning on January 20th of 2017, safety will be restored." Short of martial law, it's not clear how Trump plans to achieve that goal. But details are irrelevant in the Trumpian universe. It's enough to know that He is Here.

"I have joined the political arena so that the powerful can no longer beat up on people who cannot defend themselves," explained Trump the More Powerful inside a literal political arena.

It was the Magnanimous Trump who stepped forward when the crowd responded to his brutal critique of Hillary Clinton's handling of U.S. foreign policy: "America is far less safe, and the world is far less stable, than when Obama made the decision to put Hillary Clinton in charge of America's foreign policy." They chanted "Lock her up!" He waved them off with a "Let's defeat her in November."

Olympian Trump takes particular delight in recounting the records he's set in his run for the nomination, and he highlighted them again in his acceptance speech.

"Who would have believed that when we started this journey on June 16th of last year we—and I say 'we' because we are a team—would have received almost 14 million votes, the most in the history of the Republican Party, and that the Republican Party would get 60 percent more votes than it received four years ago?" an exuberant Trump asked. Unfortunately, he set another record with his address—at 75 minutes, it was the longest acceptance speech, Republican or Democratic, in modern political history.

It was only near the end of his marathon speech that Trump exposed the soft underbelly of Clinton's campaign, and it was done so quickly, and with so little apparent thought, it was not clear Trump knew what he was doing.

Details are irrelevant in the Trumpian universe. It's enough to know that He is Here.

"My opponent asks her supporters to recite a three-word loyalty pledge," Trump said in an apparent ad-lib from his prepared text. "It reads: I'm With Her. I choose to recite a different pledge. My pledge reads: I'M WITH YOU—THE AMERICAN PEOPLE!"

"I am your voice."

The major fault line through the Clinton campaign—one Bernie Sanders capitalized on to stunning effect—is her implied conviction that she is in this alone. From the left and from the right, voters this year have expressed a decided preference for candidates who are with them, with them against candidates who claim to be for them. Trump is paternalistic where Sanders was collaborative, but the net impression is the same. If Warrior Trump is smart, this is the drum he will continue to beat.
