Sputnik... China road tested its futuristic method of public transport, the transit elevated bus (TEB-1), which allows cars to pass underneath due to its straddle design.

The test was conducted Tuesday in Qinhuangdao City, north China's Hebei Province, in order to evaluate the braking system, drag and power consumption.

Elevated bus debuts at Beijing International High-Tech Expo Youtube / CCTV News Riding High: This Huge 'Bus' is Not Afraid of Any Traffic Jams China's homebuilt bus is 22-meter-long, 7.8-meter-wide and 4.8-meter-high and can carry up to 300 passengers. The interior of the TEB-1 features ample seats and plenty space to stand. The bus follows a rail path.

The novel vehicle was designed to ease traffic congestion. Its passenger compartment spans the width of two traffic lanes and rises far above other vehicles on the road, so that it can easily pass them, avoiding traffic jams.

The bus has already attracted interest from France, India, Brazil and Indonesia, Xinhua agency reported.

Great idea -- but oh, the 1st crash that happens under one.

There was a terrible bus crash in central calif last night on highway 99 north. The bus veered off the road into a light pole which literally sheered the bus from the front all the way through. Amputating passengers extremities even. 5 dead. Family said that the Hispanic driver "only got 4 hours sleep the night before" and was one mile from his destination. If that's true he should be in prison, if the maniac drove tired which is illegal. He obviously didn't even hit the breaks so he probably did doze off. The news footage of the light pole sheering the entire length of the bus is stunning. By the way I alwAys say that the drive up the i5 or 99 near fresno is the worst, most awful dreadful boring drive on earth. I can't stand it and avoid it if possible
