If yes, then you must know how to preserve the meat if youve captured one in the wild. Moreover, tossing out the meat that could be the ration for your whole stay doesnt seem to be a good idea. So, all you need is to keep up on some award-winning ways to preserve the meat in the wilderness. 1. Lock up the right tools You cant preserve the meat in wilderness if you dont have the right tools, the major ones being: Smoke Rack Its a place where youll be placing your meat for smoking. Fire While there may be other options for smoking, youll generally need fire to complete the smoking job. Besides, it will also save you big on time if thats a concern with you. Sunlight & Wind If fire is out of your reach, you can expose your meat to sunlight and wind to turn it into a jerky and store it for future use. Measure your racks height Just ensure that your meat is at an appropriate distance from the stretch where fire is burnt. Neither should it be too close nor too far. While putting it too far wont serve the purpose, putting it too close might accidently cook your meat. And, cooked meat is a good option only when you want to consume it immediately since if you store it; there will be a high possibility of botulism bacteria growing into it. Consequently, you may suffer from food poisoning. 2. Season it with spices Well, if you know that you cant eat meat in its purest form and without any spices, its better you look for a few that you can easily find in wilderness. Indeed, it would be great if youve got your own spices in advance as this will certainly spruce up your meats taste. A pinch of salt & pepper would do well. 3. Smoke it for 48 hours Dont forget that you can smoke meat only up to 48 hours, thats the maximum amount as going beyond that will start cooking your meat even if the blame is at a fair distance from the rack where your meat is placed. On the other hand, smoking meat for a good 48 hours will transform it into a jerky form, making it easy for you to eat it while youre out in the wild. 4. Check out jerky every now and then Remember that you need to prevent your meat from getting cooked and only thing that can save you from this situation is inspecting it at periodic intervals. Of course, theres an apparent change in meats appearance when its done, but you need to master the art to get the perfect jerky. While majority meats get pinkish when done, smoked meat (which is converted into jerky) will have a dark reddish brown color. Besides, jerky forms are harder and are likely to retain the form they are in. So, now that you know how to preserve meat in the wilderness, you can certainly have meat for a particular time during survival. Or do as Uncle Ted advises, kill it and grill it.
The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out... without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane, intolerable. ~ H. L. Mencken
You'd better be miles from nowhere if you are going to smoke meat and not have hungry visitors. Native indians could smell smoke at least five miles away. And that is without it being meat smoke. U.S. Constitution - Article IV, Section 4: NO BORDERS + NO LAWS = NO COUNTRY
There's no injuns around here. Only a few crack heads and my crazy Mormon neighbor. ;) "When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall, one by one." Edmund Burke
