Telegraph... Gallstones are a tell-tale sign of an increased risk of heart disease, particularly among those who look outwardly healthy, new research suggests. A survey of more than 840,000 people found that a history of gallstone disease was associated with a 23 per cent higher chance of developing coronary heart disease, and that the association was even stronger in those who were not obese, diabetic or suffering from high blood pressure. "Patients with gallstone disease should be monitored closely based on a careful assessment of both gallstone and heart disease risk factors"Professor Lu Qi Gallstones occur when balls of cholesterol form in the gallbladder. The affliction affects more than one in 10 people in the UK, including television gardener Alan Titchmarsh who was airlifted to hospital in April after gallstones formed following a meal of fish and chips and Easter eggs. The condition shares many risk factors with heart disease, such as diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity. But whereas people who are already overweight or obese are likely to be aware of their increased risk of heart disease, gallstones could be a useful warning to those who look outwardly healthy. “Our results suggest that patients with gallstone disease should be monitored closely based on a careful assessment of both gallstone and heart disease risk factors,” said Lu Qi, professor of epidemiology at Tulane University in New Orleans, where the research was conducted. “Preventing gallstone disease may also benefit heart health.” The study was published in the journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology. As I finished off another 2-liter bottle of Polar 100% Natural Calorie Free Seltzer, I read in a tabloid that drinking lots of water is the best way to avoid stones -- keeps your pee clear.

I more than doubled water intake after bladder stone removed. It was so big that it doubled bladder capacity.
Whew! Did you feel pain down there? (Dumb question?) Cold fizz water -- there's nothing like it in my book. Only pain was from fragments (sand)from stone being worn down and passed out with small amounts of natural urine flow. Chunks were stuck in the catheter inlet (which I'm using to avoid prostectomy). Stone was so large that ultra sound tech couldn't find it; she called in supervisor who spotted it and immediately assembled an operating crew. So drink lots of water but only a few sips at a time after such an operation or the sewed-up bladder will develop a leak/infection requiring another week in hospital.
