The wicked queen in Snow White had a magic mirror that told the truth. French scientists have gone one better. They have a mirror that will tell the ugly truth - five years on.

They have fashioned a thinking looking glass that will offer a reflection of the future, after years of binge drinking and junk food have taken their toll, according to New Scientist today. This mirror will know you better than you know yourself, and never fail to tell you so.

Researchers at Accenture Technology, in Sophia Antipolis near Nice, have devised a flat liquid crystal display television screen linked to a set of cameras and some powerful image processing technology. Its first role is to capture the real you, the one you present to the screen.

But the computer-powered mirror will also be picking up data from a network of discreet spy cameras around the house, which will monitor the time spent watching television, eating pizzas, drinking beer and paying sly visits to the fridge and the biscuit barrel. It will also ask - by vocal or text messages - to confirm the pattern of self-indulgence.

It will take the data, and a sophisticated software package will begin to assemble a picture of the likely effects of the day's diet and exercise, or gluttony and sloth. And then, at the touch of a button, it will reveal the future you, five years on.

One part of the programme will calculate the extra weight. Another will contemplate the ravages of time and dissolution on the face itself. Too much alcohol? The toll, five years on, will show up immediately in blotchy skin and early wrinkles.

The idea, of course, is to deliver a warning now: this is the digital mirror as personal trainer and nutritional coach.

"Technology can be quite persuasive," laboratory director Martin Illsey told the magazine.

"There will be several options for the visual feedback the user gets, ranging from weight gain to modifying skin tone, to increasing the shadows under the eyes."

A prototype could be ready this summer.

If pictures of blackened lungs from decades of smoking won't stop teenagers from smoking, I doubt if this stupid idea will have any effect either.

HehHeh.

My mother is 84 and spends a good part of her day messing with recycling. I swear. She reads those little #s (with a magnifying glass), and knows which of the 3 barrels that # should go into to. I just throw everything in the trash. I've caught her pulling cardboard and plastic bottles out of the kitchen trash and disposing of them properly. So, it is almost possible to recycle on your deathbed too.

That's what the deathbed IS. Going into the "recycle" bin. ;)

We're generally a self-indulgent, lazy society. I had hard words w/ a colleague who was nearly 400 lb, and chastized ME for eating a sensible lunch while we were out w/ the lunch crew from work.

Made her "feel bad". So, I should be sympathetically fat???

She's done that before. I'm sittin there, still sweating from a 4 mile run, eating a handful of peanuts for lunch, she's eating a bag of Wendy's hamburgers PLUS giant Frosty and saying:

I've dumped off 80lbs in a little over a year. It was really a LOT eaiser than I thought it would be. the first two weeks were hell, but after that the really bad hunger pangs subside. Ritz crackers helped a lot. They satisfy the munchy urge and if you don't gorge too many of them they don't hurt much.

I got 10 more lbs to go and they are the really stubborn ones!

You could always talk her into having her cervical spine fused like I did! My throat swelled so badly I couldn't swallow for a month!

I lost ALOT of weight (okay, so maybe it's not a GREAT diet plan - but it works!).

Hey, if she keeps tipping in at 350+ lb, she'll have to have something fused to continue to support her.

Go figure, I made mine work w/ diet and exercise, just like the book says...

I'm overweight. Not morbidly obese, but middle-aged spread kinda snuck up on me by the time I was 8 or 9.

A couple years ago I went through a healthy phase where I was eating a lot more fresh fruits and vegetables, and a sammich for lunch - supermarket deli turkey or chicken with lettuce and a small amount of mayo, quit drinking, the whole nine yards for about 3 months and only lost 10 pounds.

I think some people are naturally heavier, I'd look frightening at 115 and a 22 inch waist.

See, that's why it's wrong to lock everyone into Social Security and Medicare too.

Hey, you're a musician, have you heard Jet Get Born CD? It's really good, I've been recommending it to everyone. Some might call them derivative, but that's a word I reserve for bands that suck. It is fair to say though that Jet were influenced by Beatles, ACDC, Stones, Zeppelin....

Listen to the record... :)

She could always try that "stomach staple" thing that is all the rage. A nurse at my job did it and lost 130 punds in 2 months.

She SWORE she tried diet and exercise (but dieting is kinda hard when you have boxes of cereal, Cheetos, candy, etc. stuffed in cubbyholes all through your office).

This girl is a candidate for it. She needs to be on drugs AND have the gastric bypass. Or she could just "bypass" the buffet table at Golden Corral more often.

And mopey? Jesus Christ, she makes Eeyore look positively bubbly by comparison.

There are all sorts of frame sizes and physiologies to consider, sure. What I'm talking about are the hippopotamian land masses shaped like Tweedledee and Tweedledum, or the folks you see on the little power scooters because their legs won't carry the load.

I was big. 292 lb in Oct. 2003, size 46 waist. I'm big framed anyway, just over 6'2", but 300 lb is too much even for that.

It's nice now to be told "you could stand to put on a few pounds, you're looking thin."

Last year was demolition, this year was supposed to be rebuild, but it's hard to stay on a weightlifting regimen. Right, Chrissy? ;)
