As a lifelong registered Democrat Duke tried to run as a DEM for the US Senate (if memory serves) when he was a Louisiana state rep (from Metairie), but the Democratic Party refused to allow him to enter the race as a Dem and the courts upheld the party's snub.
And, the difference between Robert Byrd the reconstructed Klansman and Duke who can never be forgiven was, Byrd gave Israel everything they ever asked for while Duke wanted to end all foreign aid.
