Trump on Immigration

by Stephen Lendman

Hillary-supporting media scoundrels blast whatever he says or doesn’t say, his August 31 immigration speech no exception. More below on this.

It’s important for all nations to have responsible immigration policies. Trump’s ideas are hardline - following in the tradition of predecessors like Obama, America’s deporter-in-chief, treating immigrants of color like enemy aliens, removing them in unprecedented numbers.

Trump’s plan omits why millions of Mexicans and Central Americans risk their lives, leaving their homelands for the unknown, leaving loved ones behind, trying to get to the United States.

They need jobs to support their families because of livelihoods lost to destructive NAFTA and CAFTA-DR legislation.

Trump insists he’ll build an impenetrable wall along America’s border with Mexico, beyond barriers in place and harsh treatment Latinos already face - and have Mexico’s government pay for it.

Famed Latin American author/political critic Eduardo Galeano (1940 - 2015) once called walls “the publishers of the poor.”

Trump’s proposal to detain and deport undocumented immigrants mirrors today’s policy. No corroborating evidence backs his claim about two million criminal aliens in America - plus what he calls many others evading justice back home.

The Department of Homeland Security and its various agencies operate as a national Gestapo. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is its largest investigative and enforcement branch, terrorizing legal and illegal immigrants of color, largely Latino ones.

Trump vowed to triple its deportation officers, operating under a new Deportation Task Force - along with hiring thousands more border patrol agents.

Cities not following his harsh policies will lose federal funding. Obama executive orders granting pseudo-amnesty to millions of undocumented immigrants will be rescinded.

In November 2014, he said “(m)ass amnesty would be unfair. Mass deportation would be both impossible and contrary to our character (sic).”

“If you meet the criteria, you can come out of the shadows and get right with the law. If you’re a criminal, you’ll be deported. If you plan to enter the US illegally, your chances of getting caught and sent back just went up.”

Trump will suspend visa issuance to individuals from countries of his choice - like Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria and other victims of US imperial ravaging.

The price for resettling any refugee from any country will be 12 others refused entry. He’ll insist countries allow back in all individuals America deports.

He’ll complete and implement a never fully established biometric entry-exit visa tracking system. Established in 1997, E-Verify aims to prevent undocumented immigrants from getting jobs in America. Trump wants the program expanded and enforced.

He favors what he calls immigration policy serving US interests, irrespective of human needs and rights.

He’ll continue dirty business as usual, enforcing hasher policies on immigrants than already. The New York Times blasted his proposals for political reasons more than legitimate ones, saying:

He “made his most brazen attempt yet to back away from his pledge to deport all 11 million undocumented immigrants (an unsubstantiated estimate), denouncing illegal immigration in vehement terms, while at the same time revising his policy agenda.”

The Times lauds Hillary’s deplorable record throughout her public life, notably her high crimes. Trump never held political office. He can only be judged on his rhetoric and what’s known of his business dealings as they might relate to how he might govern as president if elected.

Policies outlined in his immigration speech leave much to be desired. The way to stop millions from leaving home for work in America is by ending jobs-destroying trade legislation like NAFTA - and preventing TPP, TTIP and other measures like them from being enacted.
