In 1999, Mahmoud Shaalan, a Palestinian-American, was born in Tampa, Florida. In 2006, he moved with his family back to their ancestral village, just north of Ramallah. Six months ago, he was shot dead by Israeli soldiers.
After he was shot, eyewitnesses said that soldiers stripped Mahmoud’s body, and left him to bleed to death on the road for more than two hours, preventing an ambulance from providing medical attention.
We don’t know the circumstances relating to Mahmoud’s death. But we can, and we should. Mahmoud was a U.S. citizen, yet not one public official at the White House or State Department has publicly called for an investigation into his death.
So we need to raise our voices. We’re coming together with our allies at the American Friends Service Committee, the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, American Muslims for Palestine and many others and calling on President Obama to launch an investigation into the death of Mahmoud Shaalan.
