Another Russia/US Syria Peace Plan Doomed to Fail

by Stephen Lendman

Give Russia credit for trying, the only major power going all-out for resolving Obama’s naked aggression on Syria diplomatically, knowing the futility of dealing with a duplicitous negotiating partner - saying or agreeing to one thing, intending something entirely different.

The last agreed on cessation of hostilities in late February was breached straightaway, US- supported terrorists fully responsible.

Multiple earlier rounds of Geneva negotiations since conflict began proved futile. Is this time different following marathon Sergey Lavrov/John Kerry talks? It takes a giant leap of naivete to think so.

Washington wants war, not peace. It wants democratically elected, overwhelmingly popular Bashar al-Assad ousted. It wants Syrian transformed into another US vassal state, its sovereignty destroyed, its territory partitioned, its resources looted, its people exploited, an Israel rival eliminated, Iran isolated ahead of targeting its sovereign independence the same way.

Diplomats always portray things positively following talks. According to Lavrov, “we have managed to coordinate a package of documents. Today's document is not the only one. In fact, there are five of them.”

“This package of documents allows to establish effective coordinated in the fight against terrorism, allows to broaden humanitarian access to the population in need in Aleppo and allows to strengthen the regime of cessation of hostilities.”

“All this created conditions for resuming the political process which has been stalling for too long.”

What matters aren’t terms agreed on, only what Washington intends ahead. Given its sordid record, it’s clear what’s coming - more dirty business as usual, continued wars in multiple theaters (including in Syria), likely escalated along with new conflicts if Hillary succeeds Obama.

Terms announced were sketchy without elaboration. They include Syrian forces abstaining from combating US-supported terrorists wrongfully designated moderates. None exist. Lavrov and Kerry know it but pretend otherwise.

Government forces won’t let these death squads massacre defenseless civilians without defending them responsibly.

A so-called Russian/US Joint Implementation Center (JIG) will be established to define “territories controlled by al-Nusra and opposition groups in areas of active hostilities.”

According to Lavrov, Russia and America agreed to conduct coordinated airstrikes “provided there is a sustained period of reduced violence” - whatever that means.

Ceasefire was announced to begin on September 12, lasting at least seven days - certain to be breached straightaway like earlier.

According to Lavrov, detailed terms agreed on won’t be made public. “They contain rather serious, sensitive information,” he said.

“We don’t want it to fall into hands of those who would surely try to disrupt the implementation of the measures stipulated within in the framework of humanitarian delivery supplies and in other parts of our agreements.”

Syrian and opposition forces will “be required to provide safe, unhindered and sustainable humanitarian, commercial and civilian access to eastern and western Aleppo,” according to Kerry.

More farcical peace talks ahead are planned - all parties to the conflict involved, foreign ones included through their terrorist proxies, instead of intra-Syrian elements alone.

Its their country. They alone should decide things, free from outside meddling in their internal affairs, Washington’s unchanged imperial agenda especially troubling - a prescription for endless conflict.

Things ahead for Syria remain grim. Washington wants its will imposed. How much Russia will put up with as Friday’s deal unravels remains to be seen.

Prospects for conflict resolution are virtually nil - especially with Hillary likely to succeed Obama next year, wanting greater US involvement to oust Assad forcefully.

Expect escalated war, not US efforts to end it, millions of Syrians continuing to be victimized by US imperial ruthlessness - a deplorable situation without resolution, regardless of Friday’s lofty Lavrov/Kerry pronouncements.
