The U.S. Army has dropped Smith & Wesson from its Modular Handgun System competition, according to a Sept. 23 report Smith & Wesson Holding Corporation made to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Smith & Wesson, which was partnered with General Dynamics, was one of five gun makers competing to replace the Army’s M9 9mm pistol.

“We and our partner in the pursuit of the U.S. Army’s Modular Handgun System, or MHS, solicitation to replace the M9 standard Army sidearm have been notified by the Department of the Army that our proposal was not selected to advance to the next phase of the competition,” according to the SEC report.

TheFirearmBlog.com was the first to report the news about Smith & Wesson.

As far as we know, the Army is still evaluating striker-fired pistols from Glock, Sig Sauer, Beretta and FN Herstal, according to a source familiar with the competition.

It will be interesting to find out why Smith & Wesson didn’t make it to the next round of MHS.

“We are assessing our options in response to the notification and remain focused on achieving our long-term strategy of organically and inorganically expanding our product offerings in the consumer market for shooting, hunting, and rugged outdoor enthusiasts,” Smith & Wesson officials said in the SEC report. Most curious.

They should allow the 1911 into this scam competition.

Keep us posted, thanks.

The fix is in for the Sig pistol, IMO. The 1911 platform doesn't work so well with women and limp-wristed faggots.

There is another causative factor.

SW apparently has not hired (bought) any retired West Point Generals lately.

S&W's striker-fired M&P SHIELD® 9mm has a 3.1" length barrel and may not meet the minimum accuracy requirements.

It appears that the pistol was conceived as the ideal "carry often-shoot seldom" sidearm, but it's possible that the short barrel not only marginalizes ballistic performance but accuracy in all but close range scenarios, such as the coast guard's ship boarding and inspection duties. (Where Ol' Slabsides, Browning's 1911 is still the preferred tool)

If Smith & Wesson had another submission I'm not aware of it.

From elsewhere:

"In a quarterly stock meeting the CEO of S&W said what they submitted was a "next version" of the M&P. I presume that means they made the M&P modular like the Sig 320 or Beretta APX, but I've never seen a photo."

Simply porting the barrel would help weaker users of the .45ACP, and yes, a longer barrel does help improve accuracy. doh

The comments on the original article were instructive to read as they are all written by experience professional shooters. Here's the winning post:

MILVET ARMY • 2 days ago
The military has spent close to over 500 million dollars of tax payer money to find the next generation pistol and at the end of the day will decide to stay with the M9 beretta. It was the same damn thing with the next generation assault rifle, and guess what we still use? Yep the M4. So with all that; the Government has spent I'm sure over a Billion bucks for what? And I have the privilege of reading this in a run down shack at a major military Access control point with a port-a-John that has no toilet paper. Gotta love fraud, waste, and abuse.

Thing is, a 1911 only carries 7 rounds, whereas something like a Glock 21 (.45 ACP) carries 13, plus one in the chamber for each. So it's a matter of having 8 or 14 rounds, and also a matter of durability and dependability. Glocks are fairly indestructible. The Gen4 Glock 21 has even less recoil than earlier models, which was relatively light to begin with. Additionally, there is an accessory rail on the lower receiver.

Needless to say, I have the Gen 4 Glock 21, with the added benefit of having a tactical light on the lower rail :)

Nice! I hope that you never, ever, need 14 rounds.

If I owned a Glock I'd be looking for ways to collect the insurance on it, too!

But, seriously, I'd like to refer you to The Gun Zone, a website by the man that I consider the foremost authority on firearms in general, and Glock pistols in particular. (Dean Speir)

And, a careful examination of Gaston Glock will reveal a strange individual for whom candor does not come easily. There have been several strange problems with the Glock, none of which ever seep into the public consciousness. One reason Dean Speir didn't last as a "formerly famous gunzine writer" was his peculiar habit of honestly evaluating product submissions.

And, advertisers would use their ad bux as leverage to force magazines to hide unfavorable findings about their products. For instance, have you ever read a review where the manufacturer had to ship 3 or 4 guns before finally putting a working model in the author's/reviewer's hands? Dean's anecdotes will shock you.

TGZ HOME PAGE

The Glock Pages

GLOCK'S GREATEST HITS KEEP ON COMING

Also, "A Glock is just as (un)safe as a cocked 1911, TT-30, Beretta 92, etc., that doesn't have an external safety engaged. There's nothing between you and an "unintended loud noise" but a few pounds of pressure and a couple of millimeters of trigger movement. (Note, it doesn't have to be your finger applying that movement, either. As many a cop and armed citizen who has been shot by their windbreaker cord, or the corner of their floppy holster can attest.)" QUORA

If using the consumer public to de-bug his products wasn't bad enough, every problem gun (or if in pieces what was left of it) was met with corporate weasel explanations that placed the blame on the ammo, the shooter, the position of the stars or anything but the gun.

Now, a police agency that had multiple feed failures or "stovepipes" could get a Glock Rep to fly in and witness the problems, but some poor civilian bastard who warranted no respect (or instilled no fear) in Glock was forever left on the suspect list as having fired over pressure hand loads (and refusing to admit it) or some other explanation that presumed the gun innocent of failure.

I ask you, have you ever seen articles and/or photos about Glock KBs (Ka-Booms-Dean Speir's designation for catastrophic failures) anywhere else?

If so, do you remember where?

Was it before you acquired a Glock?

If not, will you now trade the gun for something that can survive a case head separation without splintering?

I can understand a shoulder-fired rocket or recoilless rifle launch tube being made of polymer, because like a tampon tube it's "use once and throw away." (Do not flush) During Vietnam soldiers were taught to render such items unusable lest they become booby trap components.

But, a tool upon which my peace of mind rests would be "fabbed up" from "INDESTRUCTO-THE SEAMLESS UFO SPACE CRAFT METAL if I could arrange it. But heat treated steel has served me well for many years.
