The study found frequent milk consumption was not good for bones and doubled the risk of death, McDougall reported. People are being poisoned from fat and environmental contaminants in the food they eat and diary is at the root of it, he suggested. According to McDougall, cow's milk is only to be consumed by calves as it causes early sexual maturation in humans as well as contributes to cancer and obesity. "It's just the wrong food for people," he said. McDougall traced America's obesity epidemic on dietary changes which have seen an increase in consuming animal foods and oils over the last 34 years. He blamed China's increasing obese population on the country shifting from 90% rice-based diet to one filled with animal products. McDougall railed against olive oil consumption, noting it has no nutritional value and when consumed gets stored under the skin as fat. He warned about treating type 2 diabetes with medicine as a recent study found those who aggressively treated with medication were at increased risk for death, heart disease, and weight gain. The increase in obesity and illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease are due to a diet of rich foods like meat, dairy, oils, and sugar, he suggested. The Pritikin Diet (similar to McDougall's Diet), popular in the 1970s, was fought against by the meat and dairy industry, who used lobbyists and other means to push their products as healthy to consume, he continued. The low carb diet, such as Atkins, and newer variations like Wheat Belly and Grain Brain recommend the opposite of the McDougall Diet, telling people to eat meat, dairy, eggs, and oil and to not eat wheat, rice, corn, and potatoes. They take a little bit of truth-- that sugar is bad for people and exaggerate it, he said. "Just because sugar isn't good for people, doesn't mean that potatoes are bad for people, or bread is bad for people...These are traditional foods...your grandma and grandpa ate these foods, worked hard in the fields, went to battle on these foods. Why all of a sudden have they become evil foods?," he asked. McDougall cited how one of his patients, Olympic athlete Carl Lewis, followed his diet, and set the world record for the 100 meter dash. He also noted that ancient gladiators were vegan. "Why do you think the gladiators lived on barley and beans, and not meat? Because it was bad form to lose in the Coliseum...and they knew to be strong and enduring they needed to eat the right food," he remarked. First hour guest, author and Board certified internist Dr. John McDougall argued that a starch-based diet (rice, corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and beans, along with some fruit and vegetables) is the healthiest for people to consume, and that a vegetarian diet is actually associated with greater longevity, according to a recent study. He also spoke about a slight drop in the rate of childhood obesity, which he suggested was due to greater awareness of nutrition, bans on such items as trans fats, and government involvement. He discussed how he'd helped patients lose weight and reverse chronic disease through a starch-based diet, in contrast to diets such as Atkins that advise against eating carbs. By basing one's diet on carbohydrates rather than proteins or fats, people will have more energy and feel better, he argued. Most large populations have successfully been geared around carbohydrate-based diets rather than proteins-- people in China eat a lot of rice, but are rarely overweight, he cited. "The more you replace meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, and oils in your diet for potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, beans, rice-- the healthier and thinner you'll be," he said.
