Syrians Die While Diplomacy Accomplishing Nothing Continues

by Stephen Lendman

Diplomacy is always the preferred way to resolve conflicts - with an important proviso vital to stress. Parties involved must share a common goal - not so in Syria.

Russia, Syria, Iran and freedom-loving people everywhere want peace and stability restored. Washington wants aggression it initiated continued to oust Assad, destroy the Syrian Arab Republic’s sovereignty, pillage its resources, exploit its people and likely balkanize the country for easier control - at the same time eliminating an Israeli rival, isolating Iran, then repeating the same strategy against the Islamic Republic.

Longstanding US policy calls for permanent wars for unchallenged global dominance, no matter the human cost, regardless of Nuremberg-level high crimes committed.

Years of post-Cold War Russian/US diplomacy on major issues accomplished nothing, especially attempts to resolve conflicts in Syria and Ukraine.

America’s sordid history shows it can’t be trusted - saying one thing, doing another, systematically breaching what it agrees to uphold, often straightaway, consistently on issues of war and peace.

Give Russia credit for trying, for acting honorably, knowing it’s dealing with a duplicitous “partner,” wanting its nation-state transformed into a US colony.

Yet criticism is warranted. Given no chance to negotiate ceasefire and conflict resolution in Syria, continued talks are futile. I’ve stressed before, the only language Washington understands is force.

On October 1, US-backed terrorists (so-called “moderates” in name only) committed 71 ceasefire breaches, 61 the previous day, according to Russia’s reconciliation center.

On Saturday, Lavrov and Kerry spoke by phone on Syria. According to Russia’s Foreign Ministry, they discussed “opportunities for normalization of the situation in Aleppo, where illegal armed groups, despite of the Russian-American agreements on cessation of fire by the conflicting sides, continue fighting.”

“Many groups of the (nonexistent) ‘moderate’ Syrian opposition refuse to dissociate themselves from Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists, which are not subject to the cease-fire.”

Lavrov rejected Kerry’s attempt for Russia to stop combating US-supported al-Nusra (al Qaeda in Syria). Stalemate continues. Conflict keeps raging with no prospect for resolution.

On Sunday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova was bluntly candid about the futility of dealing with Washington, saying its policymakers are “really muddying the waters and not allowing to reach an agreement.”

“Their logic is why do we need diplomacy, the UN, talks, international law. Why do we need any commitments on the international arena, when there is power and the right of a powerful one, and there are our own national laws which may stand above other laws and be strengthened by methods of resolving a problem by power.”

“We already know this logic. There is nothing new about it. It usually ends with one thing - full-scale war.”

“If (Washington) starts a direct aggression against Damascus and the Syrian army, this will lead to scary tectonic shifts, not only on the territory of Syria, but in the whole region as well” and beyond.

Separately, John Kerry privately admitted America has no “basis (for intervention in Syria), our lawyers tell us, unless we have a UN Security Council Resolution which the Russians can veto or unless we are under attack from folks or unless we are invited in.”

“Russia is invited in by the legitimate regime” - democratically elected, overwhelmingly popular, Kerry’s admission an acknowledgement of naked US aggression against a sovereign state in less than so many words.

Revealing it won’t change imperial policy, committed to regime change by any means, raping an entire country and its people Washington’s chosen strategy.

One of history’s great crimes remains ongoing with no prospect for resolution.
