In this experiment, the researchers put dog treats inside a box. Lifting the lid was the only necessary action for getting the treat. But when researchers taught dogs to use the box, the instructors first pulled a lever on the side of the box.

However, the dogs soon figured out the lever was irrelevant to getting the treat. So they stopped using it.
