EU Blasts Russia and Syria, Ignores Its Complicity with US War Crimes

by Stephen Lendman

Meeting in Luxembourg on October 17, EU foreign ministers issued a joint statement, irresponsibly condemning Russian and Syrian anti-terrorist operations in east Aleppo - ignoring their complicity with US high crimes.

They lied saying Russian and Syrian airstrikes in east Aleppo “may amount to war crimes” - failing to explain they’re combating US-supported terrorists.

They lied calling their “bombardment…clearly disproportionate.”

They lied claiming their offensive involves “the deliberate targeting of hospitals, medical personnel, schools, and essential infrastructure, as well as the use of barrel bombs, cluster bombs, and chemical weapons.”

They lied blaming Syria for failing to protect its people. They lied claiming Assad continues committing “gross violations and abuses of human rights (and) international law…”

They considered escalated war on the phony pretext of humanitarian intervention - code language for naked aggression, while at the same time calling for diplomatic conflict resolution.

Britain’s Foreign Minister Boris Johnson shamelessly called Russia Syria’s “puppeteer,” adding the operations of both countries “shames humanity.”

French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said EU ministers considered “all the options to put much stronger pressure” on Moscow and Damascus.

EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said Brussels wasn’t considering new sanctions on Russia and Syria, just likely extending existing ones.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said “I don’t see how sanctions with a possible longterm effect are supposed to contribute to improving supplies to the civilian population. So I am not the only one who…is rather skeptical about” them.

Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz said they “can lead to a further escalation.”

Separately, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu announced a 48-hour ceasefire in east Aleppo, effective Tuesday (a longer period than the earlier one scheduled for 8 hours on October 20), to permit delivery of humanitarian aid, along with letting civilians and anti-government fighters leave the area with assurances of safe passage.

“Every party genuinely interested in swift stabilization in Aleppo should take real practical steps towards it rather than drag their feet for political gain,” Shoigu stressed.

On Monday, Russian UN envoy Vitaly Churkin said al-Nusra terrorists can either leave Aleppo voluntarily or “be wiped out.”

Earlier humanitarian pauses gave US-supported terrorists time to regroup, rearm and mobilize for new attacks, civilians harmed most.

Expect Russia’s latest good faith effort to be no more successful than previous ones. Conflict in Syria won’t end as long as Washington wants endless war for regime change. Fighting could continue for years.
