BULGARIANS are growing increasingly angry at the EU, with demands growing the nation should quit the crumbling bloc - just 10 years after joining.

General Rumen Radev is likely to become leader of Bulgaria on Sunday and prefers Putin to the EU

Disappointed Bulgarians are now looking towards Russia to protect their interests as they claim Brussels' bureaucrats fail to act on their concerns. The country will vote on its next president on Sunday with voters expected to choose air force commander General Rumen Radev as their new leader - who is friendly toward the Kremlin.

Gen Radev has stated he believes Bulgaria should re-assess its international alliances, including membership of NATO. Related articles

Bulgarian President: Putin is 'playing games' with Europe to CONQUER The country already has a strong relationship with Mr Putin because of its reliance on Russia for energy, military equipment and tourism income.

One Bulgarian, 48-year-old Emilia Trencheva, said: "The West and the European Union committed many mistakes with Russia in recent years. Russia is very important and they isolated it.

"Rumen Radev will find the right balance. He promised security and this is what people want to hear."

General Rumen Radev is the favourite to become the next leader of Bulgaria Bulgaria is one of several former Soviet states at risk of being invaded by Russia following its annexation of Crimea two years ago.

Gen Radev has expressed sympathy for Russia's aggressive expansion into nearby states.

He said: "Of course there are violations of international law in Crimea. But it is also a fact that at the moment, a Russian flag is flying over Crimea. What should we do? Close our eyes?"

The Sofia administration has grown weary of the EU overlooking its needs Bulgaria's Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov said if Gen Radev wins the election, the country could face a major stalemate with the European Union because he sided with the Russian view on Crimea.

Bulgarians share a similar language and the same alphabet with Russians and unlike the Baltic states and other neighbouring countries, most of the population do not see Vladimir Putin as a threat.

The country, which has a population of 7.2 million people, joined the EU in 2007 hoping it would bring prosperity and help to oust corrupt politicians from power.

The EU no longer fulfils the hopes of many people

Parvan Simeonov, a Bulgarian political analyst

But Bulgaria remains the EU's poorest member and two years ago people took to the streets in anger of Brussels' failings.

Parvan Simeonov, a political analyst, said: "We see a collapse of trust in traditional authorities in the European Union. Only a few years ago, it was unthinkable to hear criticism of Western governments. This is no longer the case. The EU no longer fulfils the hopes of many people."

There was no violation of international law in Crimea, and Russia did not invade Ukraine.

Bulgaria is a nice country, we went there last summer. I recall it being clean, quiet and peaceful. At tbe time i had developed some pretty bad bronchitis and i remember going to a pharmacy for medicine. Now whenever we mention Bulgaria my wife teases that I just want to go back to see the cute little bulgarian hottie behind the counter who was very attentive and helpful. Lol

Your impression that Bulgarians are not as much enamored with US and Western lifestyle as most of the rest of the world?

I wasn't there too long, but it struck me as more of an old-school, white European quiet peaceful place. Like poland, one of my favorite European countries, they didn't seem to care much about speaking english. My least favorite European countries are Denmark and France. Overrun by African refugees, nasty.
