Obama on Transition to Trump

by Stephen Lendman

First the good news. Bill and Hillary Clinton are politically dead. So is their influence-peddling pay- to-pay racket with nothing to sell. Will Trump hold them accountable for their high crimes? Don’t bet on it.

Thankfully the end of Obama’s deplorable tenure approaches - a legacy of multiple imperial wars, countless millions harmed at home and abroad, neoliberal harshness during protracted Main Street Depression conditions, and greater police state repression than under Bush/Cheney.

At his Monday press conference, likely his last as president, dissembling and lack of candor substituted for straight talk, saying “(w)hen we turn over the keys, the car’s in pretty good shape… The incoming admin doesn’t have to put out a huge number of fires.”

The privileged few never had it better under his leadership. Most others endure lump of coal harshness - perhaps with little or no relief coming under Trump.

Obama indicated continuity from his successor, saying “regardless of what experience or assumptions he brought to the office, (incumbency) has a way of waking you up.”

Urging Trump to respect “norms…vital to a functioning democracy,” he mentioned “civility and tolerance and a commitment to reason and facts and analysis.”

Fact: America is democratic in name only.

Fact: Obama rejected “civility and tolerance” throughout his tenure, serving the nation’s privileged alone, inflicting enormous harm on most Americans, along with waging endless war on humanity.

In his oval office meeting with Trump last week, he said the president-elect “expressed a great interest in maintaining our core strategic relationships, including the one with NATO.”

“(T)here was no weakening of resolve,” assuring America intends continuity of foreign policy under Trump. If so, the president-elect earlier calling NATO “obsolete and must be changed to additionally focus on terrorism as well as some of the things it is currently focused on” was meaningless rhetoric.

So was adding “(i)t is time to renegotiate, and the time is now…Maybe NATO will dissolve, and that’s OK, not the worst thing in the world.”

Other issues Obama touched on included transitioning from Obamacare to Trumpcare, the Iran nuclear deal, TPP, the Paris climate agreement, along with economic conditions at home and abroad.

He admitted having “concerns” about Trump’s impending incumbency - code language for angst over Hillary’s defeat.

He held back on criticizing Trump, earlier calling him “unfit to serve,” now saying he’s “pragmatic. And that can serve him well as long as he has got good people around him, and he has a clear sense of direction.”

Called the “Deporter in Chief” for enforcing white supremacist policies and deporting more immigrants than all his predecessors combined, he shamelessly said he’ll “urge (Trump) and the incoming administration to think long and hard before” forcing children of undocumented immigrants to leave the country.

On January 20, Trump becomes America’s 45th president, winning the Electoral College vote, losing the popular one two ways - the final totals when known plus nearly half the electorate abstaining, rejecting both duopoly candidates.
