The Oscar-winning star says the word 'hero' is 'overdone' and should be reserved for real heroes like pilot Chesley 'Sully' Sullenberger, who is the subject of his latest film

Clint Eastwood has claimed too many people are labelled heroes because of political correctness.

The Oscar-winning star has directed Sully: Miracle On The Hudson, a film about the pilot who landed a stricken passenger plane on New York's Hudson River in 2009.

Eastwood said pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, who saved the lives of all 155 people on board, has been rightly hailed a hero but the term was often "overdone".

"It's certainly different to when I grew up," he said.

"It's all in this sort of politically correct thing where everyone has to win a prize. All the little boys in the class have to go home with a first place trophy.

"He went extra and beyond what was expected."

The film's star Tom Hanks said he believed Sully's work as a pilot was heroic but he agreed with Eastwood that the term is "ridiculously overused".

The Oscar-winning actor said: "The textbook definition of a hero is someone who voluntarily puts themselves in harm's way for the betterment of others.

"That happens on occasion and it is a ridiculously overused word because it's a shorthand for accomplishment.

"Not all accomplishments are heroic accomplishments. Sometimes it's just people doing the right thing and you don't necessarily deserve kudos for doing the right thing.

"Heroism is rare as lightning storms."

"I'm a pussy, man," he said. "I'm an actor. I haven't done anything that's near death.

"Once I had to swim in the open ocean in Cast Away, oh jeepers. Terrible. Crazy. I've never experienced anything remotely like this.

"There's four roles for us in real life. You can be a hero, villain, coward or bystander. I'm the bystander."

- Sully: Miracle On The Hudson is released in UK cinemas on December 2.

No, Sully is not a hero. That's absurd.

He saved his own life along with all the others, and at no point did he act on any decision to risk his own life to save others.

What he did do is act in an life-endangering emergency situation in an truly expert manner which resulted in no deaths and, I think, only one serious injury. He's a pro, and he deserves a lot of praise. But he's not a hero.

A hero is someone who chooses to risk his life or health in an attempt to save another person's life. Sully made no such choice. He was in the same boat as all the other passengers and crew and he saved his own life as much as all the others. That doesn't qualify for herohood.

Excellent analysis. A great pilot who executed a perfect maneuver.

Regardless because of political correctness, half the heroes must be women. However, in reality, women are almost never heroes.

Heroes: Reagan, Patton, Tramp, sorry Trump. BULL DREN. There are no heroes anymore, it is all MSM making dren up and telling lies just to make it all right. I forget who said it: "tell a lie enough and it will become truth"

Regardless because of political correctness, half the heroes must be women. However, in reality, women are almost never heroes.

All women giving birth are, by the above definition, heroes because by doing so they put their lives and health at risk more than most men ever do.

If they didn't do so there would be no human race.

Whatever risk there are to women giving birth is insignificant compared to the risk men when there is a war and in high risk occupations that almost all women don't do.

That's true. Mortality due to soldiering in the case of modern warfare is about twice that of childbirth mortality under modern medical care. The mortality for jobs like logging and fishing are even higher.

Of course most men - the vast majority - aren't engaged in jobs that are remotely as dangerous as those of soldiers, fishermen or loggers.

The last survey that I read said the truck drivers have the most dangerous job in this country. Cops were down around 14th. IIRC

When I work for State of Illinois, we had 3 guys killed on road in 2 years time. And that was just for District 1. And I know of 1 that was crippled for life as a paraplegic. When I left there and started to drive OTR, I saw plenty of bad wrecks and if there were fatalities they were usually people in cars.

Yet another mess for DJT to correct. The man has a fuller than full platter.

We were Teamsters with State of Illinois. But I recall one time 3 of us would not donate to United Way. They put us out on litter picking and dropped us off a half mile apart. The black guy took a tumble down the hill. I recall the ambulance and squad car making uturn at end of gwall to pick him up. After that we had orders not to work without immediate supervision. Putting us out like that was a kind of punishment. But it backfired on them. LOL
