Russia, Iran and Turkey Pledge to Resolve War on Syria

by Stephen Lendman

After meeting with his Iranian and Turkish counterparts in Moscow, Sergey Lavrov said “I believe (this trilateral) format…is the most effective one. Today’s troika format has proved with practical action it is in demand.”

“We (agree on the urgency of) terminat(ing) violence, combat operations, unhampered delivery of humanitarian aid and the start of an inclusive political process incorporating all Syrian parties concerned without any preconditions.”

“Regretably…our (international) counterparts” seem bent on polar opposite policies, favoring war, not resolution.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said “(w)e’re moving forward very seriously, logically and consistently. Also, humanitarian aid will be provided and a political solution will be searched for, ensuring respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity of Syria while the emphasis will be on the political solution as the final settlement of the Syrian issue.”

Russia, Iran and Turkey “pledge(d) to fight together against the Islamic State, Jabhat al-Nusra and the affiliated organizations.”

The aim is to liberate Syria entirely from its terrorist infestation, no simple task without international cooperation - including from America under Trump next year.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said “experts are working on the text of the Moscow declaration on immediate steps toward resolving the Syrian crisis. This is a thorough, extremely necessary document.”

Previous efforts involving Washington, Britain and France failed, why their foreign ministers were excluded from Russian, Iranian and Turkish talks, invitations to Moscow not forthcoming.

Their belligerence toward Syria means involving them in peace talks assures failure. Russia and Iran are united with Syria in ending years of conflict diplomatically.

Given its known support for ISIS, al-Nusra and other terrorist groups, Turkey has lots of proving to do. Nothing Erdogan and his ministers agree to can be accepted at face value.
