Forty-eight years ago today, on Jan. 29, 1969, The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour debuted on CBS.

Campbell earned his own variety show following his tenure as a successful summer replacement for The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in 1968. The artist’s hit single “Gentle on My Mind” became the theme song of the show, and his industry connections allowed him to book guests such as the Beatles, John Wayne, Tim Conway, the Monkees, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Roger Miller and Mel Tillis, among others, for his variety show.

The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour is also credited with helping to launch the careers of Anne Murray and Jerry Reed, thanks in part to their appearances on the series. The show was nominated for numerous awards, including three Primetime Emmy Awards; a collection of highlights from The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour is available on DVD via Amazon.

The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour ran until 1972, when the show was canceled by CBS; however, Campbell’s days of being on in the spotlight were far from over. Following his tenure on The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, the musical icon starred in The Glen Campbell Music Show, a music variety show that ran for one season (1982-1983); he also starred in several movies and TV shows, including True Grit, Norwood and Uphill All the Way.

Campbell’s most recent onscreen appearance came in his documentary, Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me, which chronicles his battle with Alzheimer’s disease. The song “I’m Not Gonna Miss You,” co-written and sung by Campbell for the film’s soundtrack, earned an Oscar nomination for Original Song and won a Grammy for Best Country Song.

Glen Campbell Set To Receive The Honor Of A 'Lifetime'

Now, Campbell is set to receive another honor of a "lifetime." As announced on Tuesday (January 31), Campbell has been selected as the 2017 recipient of the National Guitar Museum's Lifetime Achievement Award!

For the past seven years, the National Guitar Museum has awarded its Lifetime Achievement Award to musicians who are known for "contributing to the legacy of the guitar and having a singular historical importance to the development and historical appreciation of the instrument."

Campbell is the first country artist to earn this prestigious award. Some of the past recipients have been B.B. King, Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath, and Roger McGuinn of The Byrds.

HP Newquist, the executive director of the National Guitar Museum, explained why the museum felt that Campbell was worthy of the award:

"Glen is best known for his singing and performing career...but equally important is his stellar guitar legacy which goes back nearly 60 years...his tremendous virtuosity as a guitarist is an essential component of recorded music over the past half century."

Newquist also explained that the museum found it important to honor Campbell's legacy now, considering his diagnosis with Alzheimer's.

"We think it important to honor Glen and his legacy now while people can still appreciate his incredible achievements, and be aware of what he’s going through," Newquist stated.

Since his diagnosis, Campbell's wife, Kim, has traveled across the country to help raise awareness about Alzheimers. She responded to the National Guitar Museum, thanking them for honoring her husband and his talents:

"Very few guitar players have the opportunity—or skill—to play the variety of styles that Glen did through his 60 years of performing. Glen's playing has surely inspired countless guitarists and will continue to do so as new generations discover his contributions to the canon of popular music."
