Iran Puts US on Notice, Trump Administration Intends New Sanctions

by Stephen Lendman

US-instituted adversarial relations with Iran are longer than with any other nation except Russia - since the Carter administration, continuing extremely hostile straightaway under Trump.

After his National Security Advisor Michael Flynn provocatively put Tehran on notice following its legitimate ballistic missile testing, along with the Trump administration suspending access to America for residents of seven Muslim countries (including Iran), its government countered with its own actions.

It’ll stop issuing visas to Americans wishing to enter the country. It intends replacing the US dollar with a new common foreign currency (perhaps the euro and/or yuan) to be used in financial and foreign exchange transactions - effective in March.

The policy change will have little effect on possible future US/Iranian trade, given deplorable bilateral relations, perhaps reaching new depths under Trump, risking possible unthinkable war between both countries - in part, to please Israel, wanting regime change.

Iran’s missile program and military preparedness are polar opposite Washington’s agenda - solely for defense, not endless aggressive wars, longstanding US policy, threatening world peace.

The nuclear deal changed nothing in irresponsible US adversarial relations toward Iran. Billions of dollars of Iranian assets remain illegally frozen.

Tehran is wrongfully blamed for terrorism committed by other nations - mainly America, Israel, Saudi Arabia, other regional rogue states and their imperial foot soldiers. Regime change remains longstanding US policy - by color revolution or naked aggression.

Unacknowledged is Iran’s outreach to all nations, seeking cooperative relations, not adversarial ones.

It’s the region’s leading proponent of peace and stability. It urges abolition of all nuclear weapons to save humanity from the scourge of potential annihilation.

Hostility toward Iran and China perhaps makes improved relations with Russia impossible. Senior advisor to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Ali Akbar Velayati said “threatening Iran is useless…This is not the first time an inexperienced” leader tried it.

“Iran does not need permission from any country to defend itself.” Unlike US actions, its own are entirely legal, threatening no one.

Trump said “nothing is off the table” in response to last Sunday’s Iranian ballistic missile test. On Friday or early next week, the Treasury Department is expected to announce new sanctions, further breaching the nuclear deal, calling for them to be eliminated, not left in place or increased.

Sunday’s missile test was Iran’s first since Trump took office, more sure to follow, a policy all countries pursue in their weapons development programs.

On Thursday, a hostile White House statement lied, saying “Iranian behavior needs to be rethought by Tehran…(W)e consider these actions to be inherently destabilizing and a threat to our friends and allies.”

The region’s only threats come from America, Israel and their rogue allies. A disturbing Trump tweet said “Iran is playing with fire - they don’t appreciate how ‘kind’ President Obama was to them. Not me!”

Not a good sign, falsely portraying Tehran as a regional threat, staying confrontational instead of fostering good relations.

The Obama admin gave Iran $1 Billion enough cash to fill a small room. This represents the frozen assets from when Iranians stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran in 1979 and held hostages for over a year until Reagan was inaugurated.

The election of Donald Trump as POTUS is a direct counter reaction to the excesses of Obama. ;)
