Small Canadian towns are now creaking under the weight of refugees crossing the border illegally from America- Since the New Year, nearly 70 people have applied as refugees in Canada after illegally crossing the border from the United States
- In order for refugees in the U.S. to gain refugee status in Canada, they need to illegally cross the border - not show up to official checkpoints
- This has been putting a strain on rural towns along the border, which have been dealing with an influx of illegal immigrants
- In Manitoba, a center that had been set up to help these border crossers was full as of Sunday
- Another popular crossing point has been the town of Hemmingford, in Quebec, just over the border from New York
The United States used to be the gold standard for refugees setting out for a better life. But ever since President Trump took office, and started cracking down on immigration, fearful refugees and asylum seekers have started illegally crossing into Canada in hopes of trading their American dreams for maple leaves. This has had a profound effect on the small Canadian towns situated near the U.S. border, which have seen refugees from Sudan, Turkey, Syria and other corners of the world show up cold and hungry from difficult border crossings in the dead of winter. Last week, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau admitted that he was 'very concerned' with the amount of refugees crossing into rural areas. But he did not say whether he would seek to suspend their agreement with the U.S. and perhaps try start allowing these people to apply for refugee status at official borders. The majority of these crossings have been happening on the New York-Quebec border, which authorities attribute to its closeness to the major East Coast cities. Some even take Ubers all the way up from New York City to the border so they can cross over.
