February 27, 2006 A FORMER marine who was raised by nuns and made a fortune selling pizza has embarked on a $540 million plan to build the first town in America to be run according to strict Catholic principles. Abortions, pornography and contraceptives will be banned in the new Florida town of Ave Maria, which has begun to take shape on former vegetable farms 145km northwest of Miami. Tom Monaghan, the founder of the Domino's Pizza chain, has stirred protests from civil rights activists by declaring that Ave Maria's pharmacies will not be allowed to sell condoms or birth control pills. The town's cable television network will carry no X-rated channels. The town will be centred on a 30m tall oratory and the first Catholic university to be built in the US for 40 years. The university's president, Nicholas J. Healy, has said future students should "help rebuild the city of God" in a country suffering from "catastrophic cultural collapse". Monaghan, 68, sold his takeaway chain in 1998 for an estimated $1.5 billion. Advertisement: A devout Catholic who has ploughed millions into religious projects - including radio stations, primary schools and a Catholic law faculty in Michigan - Monaghan has bought about 2000ha previously used by migrant farmers. The land on the western edge of the Everglades swamp will eventually house up to 30,000 people, with 5000 students living on the university campus. Florida officials have declared the project a development bonanza for a depressed area and Governor Jeb Bush attended a groundbreaking ceremony for the university earlier this month. Civil rights activists and other watchdogs concerned about the separation of church and state are threatening lawsuits if Ave Maria attempts to enforce Catholic dogma - none of which has deterred Monaghan, who initially tried to build his new university in Michigan but could not get permission. Asked recently about possible lawsuits in Florida, he replied: "That's great. That would be the best publicity we could get." Monaghan was sent to a Catholic orphanage with his brother James after the death of their father on Christmas Eve 1941. After serving with the US Marines and later dropping out of university, he founded Domino's in 1960 with his brother, who sold back his share for a Volkswagen Beetle. Monaghan then set about building what became America's second-largest pizza chain. He collected antique cars, bought a yacht and became the owner of the Detroit Tigers baseball team. About 15 years ago he read Mere Christianity by CS Lewis. "That was a big turnaround," he said recently. "I decided to simplify my life. No more airplanes, no more yachts. It's been a big relief." Sources close to the project said Monaghan was particularly disturbed by what he regards as the failure of Western civilisation to resist Islamic fundamentalism. In a speech to students last year Healy warned that Islam "no longer faces a religiously dynamic West".

I don't see what's wrong with people forming communities based on either religion or race. "Diversity" is an artificial "value" that inspires only our globalist elites, and which has to be forced on the rest of us, via lawsuits by so-called "civil rights activists."

I have no problem with this. As long as it's all voluntary, as of course, it will be - no one HAS to live in this new town and folks can leave if they change their minds. I don't see how anyone could object to this. If peope want to set up a town or village or community according to whatever terms of association - race, religion, politics, eye color - that should be their business only. Now if that community starts reaching out and trying to control or dominate organizations or political bodies beyond its scope - that would be a different issue.

I agree completely. I don't hate people from other backgrounds, racial, religious other otherwise - I would just prefer to live with people more like myself or from my own background. Most people are like this, it's....normal.

It's also what would truly maintain the elite's paramount virtue of "diversity." But then, somehow I think they either don't really understand what "diversity" is, or the whole concept is simply a nice sounding "cover" for another yarn in the warp and woof of their social control.
I agree completely. I don't hate people from other backgrounds, racial, religious other otherwise - I would just prefer to live with people more like myself or from my own background. Most people are like this, it's....normal.

I think the elites concept of "diversity" comes down to "let them fight amongst themselves - oh, and eat cake". Actually if we look back at the early history of this country we see that various religious or ethnic groups founded innumberable communities and towns. We have a long history of what this Domino's guy is proposing - we just have been too caught up in this diversity bullshit for nearly a generation now. I think most people, if they really think about diveristy, and live in a very diverse community, and were to be HONEST about their experiences - would admit that it's a major pain in the ass to actually live with. The only good thing about diversity in a community is the restaurants.

And so many of them wouldn't even think of living in "diverse" neighborhoods themselves. How many black people do you think live in the Clinton's new hometown of Chappaqua, NY if the median income there is over $160,000? Last year, when über-liberal Phil Donohue put his house in Westport CT up for sale, I checked the demographics of Westport and found out it was over 95% white. I've heard Donohue rhapsodize about New York City and its "diversity," which as you say, for him means he can have Thai food one night, Ethiopian cuisine the next. But each time, the drunken, sated Donohue gets to commute back to his all-white neighborhood to sleep off his indigestion.

I remember what happened a few years back in our ultra liberal community of Cambridge - where many of the elites live. They're all white, of course. Well, there was some plan to create some school in the neighborhood that would bring in little black children from the 'Hood. The elites buried that plan deeper than Jimmy Hoffa.
