Trump to Separate Undocumented Refugee Mothers from Children? by Stephen Lendman
According to Reuters, (w)omen and children crossing together illegally into the United States could be separated by US authorities under a proposal being considered by the Department of Homeland Security - citing unnamed government sources.
The idea is to discourage mothers in unfavored countries from coming to America with children - treating them harshly to dissuade others from seeking refuge here.
Detention facilities for undocumented immigrants are deplorable, hundreds of thousands of detainees inhumanely treated, conditions as bad or worse than imprisoned criminals face - at an enormous cost to taxpayers.
According to National Immigration Law Center executive director Marlielena Hincapie, Trumps proposal if implemented could create lifelong psychological trauma - (e)specially for children that have just completed a perilous journey from Central America.
She added his administration will likely face legal challenges if it proceeds, based on immigration and family law.
Migration Policy Institutes Randy Capps said (y)ou are talking about a pretty rapid increase in the detention population if you are going to do this. The question is really how much detention can they afford.
Last week, DHS Secretary John Kelly ordered Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to deport or prosecute parents arriving in America undocumented, risking their lives to get here, too many perishing along the way, treated like criminals instead of human beings in need.
