It calls for large increases in defense and homeland security spending instead of vitally needed major cuts in both at a time Americas only enemies are ones it invents. More money for US veterans is long overdue. Theyre abysmally treated. They deserve much better. A 6% budget increase helps but isnt enough. If America waged peace instead of permanent wars, wounded, maimed and traumatized vets wouldnt exist. Trumps budget cuts other discretionary spending across the board, vital programs losing out. Though likely to be changed by Congress, heres whats proposed for starters: EPA cut 31% State Department and USAID cut 29% Department of Agriculture cut 21% Labor Department cut 21% DOJ cut 20% National Institutes of Health cut 20% Health and Human Services cut 16% Commerce cut 16% Education cut 14% Transportation cut 13% Housing and Urban Development cut 12% Interior Department cut 12% National Science Foundation and so-called other agencies cut up to 10% Energy Department cut 6% Treasury Department cut 4% NASA cut 1% Agencies targeted for larger cuts or elimination include government-funded medical and scientific research, the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, legal and home energy assistance for the poor, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, AmeriCorps, the Chemical Safety Board, the Community Development Block Grant Program, Amtrack, the Appalachian Regional Commission, among others. Trumps budget is cruel and inhuman, mostly harming Americas most vulnerable, sure to increase hunger, homelessness and overall deprivation - while providing tens of billions more dollars for warmaking, Trump perhaps planning new countries to attack. His proposed American Healthcare Act (AHCA - Trumpcare) assures less affordability, over 50 million uninsured by 2026, Medicaid recipients hardest hit, the nations rich and business benefitting hugely. His tax cut proposal coming later will benefit corporate America and its privileged class, leaving less revenue for vitally needed social programs. Trumps promise to be a leader serving all Americans was hollow. Hes just another dirty politician - favoring the rich, scorning the nations least advantaged. The good news is Congress wont pass his budget as proposed. The bad news is whats finally enacted will harm most Americans, especially millions impoverished, dependent on help only government can provide. Stephen Lendman lives in Chicago.
