Donald Trump warned by Russia he is 'one step away from military clashes with Russia after Syria blitz

Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump were last night urged to hold emergency talks as growing tensions in the Middle East threatened to explode into war.

The Russian president sent the missile warship Admiral Grigorovich to Syria after the US leader yesterday unleashed 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles on the airfield from where Bashar al-Assad launched a sarin gas attack on his own people.

A British nuclear submarine is patrolling the Mediterranean and Nato forces were on high alert throughout the region.

As the region teetered on the brink, world leaders, including Theresa May, backed the American strikes at al-Shayrat base, but there were calls for talks in a bid to prevent the crisis turning into a wider conflict.

Russia’s Prime Minister Dimitry Medvedev claimed the US missile strike was illegal and warned Mr Trump had been “one step away from military clashes with Russia”.

But the US president insisted it was time the Assad regime was reined in from its barbarous attacks on innocent Syrians.

Tuesday’s gas strike at the city of Khan Sheikhoun killed 86 civilians, including 30 children and 20 women.

Downing Street said Mrs May was kept “fully informed” of the US airstrike, which killed nine people and destroyed nine fighter jets as well as several buildings.

Britain’s Nato allies, including Germany, France and Canada, backed Mr Trump’s raid.

In a joint statement, Angela Merkel and Francois Hollande said Assad “bears full responsibility” for the attack following his use of nerve gas against his own people.

Western allies in the Middle East including Saudi Arabia and the UAE hailed the strike as a “courageous decision”. Turkey and Israel also praised it. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said it was a “positive” first step but demanded an escalation against Syria from the West.

He added: “We find it a positive and concrete step taken against the war crimes of the Assad regime. Is it enough? I don’t find it enough.

The Kremlin said: “President Putin views the US strikes as aggression against a sovereign state in violation of the norms of international law and on a made-up pretext. This step by Washington will inflict major damage on US-Russia ties, which are already in a lamentable state.” Only Iran and terror group Hizbollah supported Assad after the attack. Tehran’s foreign ministry spokesman Bahrem Qasemi said: “Such measures will strengthen terrorists in Syria.”

The American raid, with missiles fired from destroyers USS Porter and USS Ross in the Mediterranean, took place in the early hours and under the cover of darkness and with little warning. Although Russia was tipped off before the missiles hit.

Moscow has suspended communication with US forces designed to stop planes colliding over Syria.

Nikki Haley: US 'prepared to do more' against Assad in Syria

President Trump is "prepared to do more" to stop the ongoing civil war in Syria if Russia cannot convince Syrian President Bashar Assad to abide by cease-fire agreements, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley warned Friday.

"The United States took a very measured step last night," Haley told the U.N. Security Council on Friday. "We are prepared to do more, but we hope that will not be necessary. It is time for all civilized nations to stop the horrors that are taking place in Syria and demand a political solution."

"Let's think about the possible reasons for Russia's failure," Haley said. "It could be that Russia is knowingly allowing chemical weapons to remain in Syria. It could be that Russia has been incompetent in its efforts to remove the chemical weapons. Or it could be that the Assad regime is playing the Russians for fools, telling them that there are no chemical weapons, all the while stockpiling them on their bases."

"I would have asked the speakers from the U.S. and other delegations not to insult my country," Vladimir Safronkov, the Russian deputy ambassador to the U.N., told the Security Council. "There is no moral right to do so. We do not do so."

Total Russian Meltdown At UN: Declares US Strike in Syria Was 'Flagrant Violation of International Law'

As the war of words continues to heat up over President Trump's Thursday attack against a Syrian airbase, United Nations envoy, Deputy Ambassador Vladimir Safronkov, called the strike a “flagrant violation of international law.”

During a Friday morning U.N. Security Council rant, Deputy Ambassador Vladimir Safronkov railed against the U.S. “aggression”:

“The United States attacked the territory of sovereign Syria. We describe that attack as a flagrant violation of international law and an act of aggression.”

“We strongly condemn the illegitimate action by the US. The consequences of this for regional and international stability could be extremely serious.”

Bolivia’s Secret Syria Effort At UN Denied By Nikki Haley: “Do So In Full Public View”

“This morning, Bolivia requested an emergency UN Security Council meeting to discuss the events in Syria. It asked for the discussion to be held in closed session. The United States, as president of the Council this month, decided the session would be held in the open. Any country that chooses to defend the atrocities of the Syrian regime will have to do so in the full public view, for all the world to hear.”

Pentagon investigating possible Russian involvement in Syrian chemical attack

posted at 8:41 pm on April 7, 2017 by John Sexton

The U.S. military has been clear that the chemical attack itself was carried out by Syrian jets. In fact, the reason we attacked the Shayrat air base is because our military saw the jets take off from that airport and fly to the site of the attack. But hours later there was a second attack on a hospital that was treating victims.

It’s worth noting that a few hours ago the Associated Press published a similar report which said, “a drone belonging to either Russia or Syria was seen hovering over the site of the chemical weapons attack.” So perhaps CNN was able to get some additional clarification that this was, in fact, a Russian drone. It makes me wonder if the Pentagon knows more than they are currently saying about this.

Once the U.S. openly asks whether Russia was complicit in the chemical attack, as Nikki Haley did today at the UN, we’re somewhat obligated to try and answer the question. And if we find proof Russia was involved we may be obligated to respond in some way. If nothing else, the fact the Pentagon is looking into this puts Russia on alert that their involvement in Syria atrocities won’t be downplayed or ignored by this administration.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley denounced Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad on Friday, saying "he thought he could get away" with using chemical weapons because Russia "would have his back."

Haley also castigated Iran and Russia for being complicit in Syria's continued actions.

"The Iranian government bears a heavy responsibility. It has propped up and shielded Syria's brutal dictator for years. Iran continues to play a role in the bloodshed in Syria," Haley said.

Russia, according to Haley, continued to stand by Assad while he violated "human decency."

"The Russian government also bears considerable responsibility. Every time Assad has crossed the line of human decency, Russia has stood beside him," Haley said.
