Russia Vetoes Unacceptable SC Resolution on Syria

by Stephen Lendman

The US/UK/French draft resolution was deplorably one-sided, hostile and unacceptable, reflecting how these rogue states consistently operate - waging naked aggression on Syria for regime change.

Russia’s Deputy UN envoy Vladimir Safronkov said it “apportioned blame prior to an objective outside investigation of the incident.”

“The outcome of the vote was predestined, because we disagreed categorically with a document that was fundamentally misconceived.”

Approving it would “legitimize” Trump’s naked aggression based on a Big Lie.

Neocon US UN envoy Nikki Haley lied, claiming “Russia said no to a resolution that would have helped promote peace in Syria.”

Passage would facilitate further US aggression, giving Trump more ammunition to launch it.

Haley disgracefully blamed Assad for Washington’s “madness and…cruelty…every day on the ground.” Her remarks signaled more US aggression to come.

Ahead of its Wednesday veto, Russia called the US/UK/French draft resolution “categorically unacceptable” - drawing conclusions about culpability without evidence, pronouncing guilt by accusation.

It bore erie resemblance to SC Res. 1973, a pretext for US-led NATO aggression on Libya, raping and destroying the country, creating endless violence, chaos and unspeakable human misery.

It implied (without overtly claiming) Syrian responsibility for the April 4 CW attack it had nothing to do with. It demanded its authorities provide flight plans, logs and other relevant information on its aerial operations for April 4.

It required Damascus to supply names of all helicopter squadron commanders, provide immediate access to its airbases, and organize meetings with its generals and other relevant officers in five days.

It included other unacceptable provisions. Syrian noncompliance could be used as a pretext for full-scale naked aggression, why Russia responsibly vetoed it.

Washington remains determined to oust Assad and destroy Syrian sovereignty. Further aggression is virtually certain. How Russia responds remains to be seen.

A Final Comment

After Wednesday’s SC vote, Syria’s UN envoy Bashar al-Jaafari commented, saying America, Britain and France used hostile language “in previous draft resolutions so (they could) justify intervention in the affairs of other states and launch military attacks…similar to what happened in Libya and other states.”

“Anyone who thoughtfully reads today’s draft resolution can realize that its real objective is not to reveal the truth, but rather to violate Syria’s sovereignty and make use of the resolution’s information, if adopted, to target the Syrian army’s cadres, capabilities and positions via the armed terrorist groups which are supported by these three countries” - along with further US-led aggression.

Separately, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem will meet with Sergey Lavrov in Moscow on April 13 - 15 to discuss the April 4 CW incident, Trump’s aggression and risk of more to come.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will join them on Friday for trilateral talks.

On Tuesday, Russian lower house State Duma International Affairs Committee chairman Leonid Slutsky said a permanent trilateral Russian/Syrian and Iranian committee will be established following the Thursday through Saturday talks.

These countries continue going all-out for diplomatic conflict resolution. America and its rogue allies want endless war and regime change.
