Pythagoras, the man behind the Pythagorean theorem was more than just a mathematician. He was a spiritual leader with followers who thought he’d been sent from Heaven. For the Pythagoreans, math was a religious experience and some equations were divine secrets, unfit for public eyes. When your middle school teacher showed you how to find the hypotenuse of a right triangle, you probably didn’t get down on your knees and start worshiping him as a god. But when it first happened in ancient Greece, that was pretty much how people reacted. There was a whole cult behind the man who figured out how to measure the side of a triangle, and—as you might imagine—they had some pretty strange beliefs.

Those funky Egyptians actually knew how to measure the sides of triangles long before Pythagoras, and they left behind a number of pretty impressive monuments that demonstrate their mathematical know how.

Pythagoras of course was the first guy reputed to have proven the proposition A² + B² = C². Pythagorean math was hooked up with lots of woo-woo Hermetic beliefs and included a regime of obligatory practices that we'd consider to be kind of trivial, like making the bed in the morning.

Apparently, as the author notes, the Pythgoreans were pretty touchy on the doctrine of irrational numbers, and there are lots of conflicting tales left us by the ancients about the assassination of mathematicians that taught such ideas. You can take all those stories with a grain of salt.

Of course in those days, they didn't have journalists like we do today who provide us with an impeccable record of what went down.

That's watcha call progress.
