Trump shelves plan to move US Embassy in Israel to Jerusalembut Nikki Haley has her own foreign policy!
How thoroughly should Washington lick Tel Aviv's boots? Very, very thoroughlyor just "very" thoroughly? This is one of the heated policy debates that has split the Trump Administration.
For the time being at least, Trump is shelving his promise to move the US Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. Apparently the proposal will be "re- evaluated down the road".
Sounds like a pretty clear, straightforward directive ... unless you're Nikki Haley.
Yes, America's most cherished mush-for-brains and also ambassador to the United Nations has gone rogueagain.
As Haaretz tells it: The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations has broken ranks with the Trump administration by supporting the relocation of the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem on Tuesday night.
Finding points of agreement on the Israel-Palestine conflict is difficult enough even when everyone is on the same page. But when senior US diplomats break from set policy, you can pretty much assume that there will be zero progress towards anything resembling a fair and equitable peace settlement.
To her credit, Haley is probably just overly ambitious since there's good reason to believe that Trump will eventually sign off on this terrible idea. But it's not exactly comforting to know that one of Washington's top diplomats is inventing her own Middle East policy again.
Haley clearly has big plans in the world of politics. The fact that she's already completely out of her league, even at a rubber stamp institution like the United Nations, isn't going to slow her down. And you should never underestimate an oaf who can deliver.
We might as well all accept the reality that Haley is a role model for thousands (millions?) of American knuckle-draggers with dreams of glory. It's going to be a long, painful journey to the bottom.
